Obama, Romney volunteers hope to make a difference

(AP) ? Re-electing President Barack Obama is so important to Guy Hancock that he spends more time as a volunteer data collector at Obama's campaign headquarters here than at his paying job as a college professor.

"He's had a hard time with a lot of things that weren't under his control but I think he's done a great job," said Hancock, 63. "I've never actually volunteered or been part of a campaign before, but I think it's really important this year."

Ousting Obama drives Karen Chew to spend hours in Fairfax County, Virginia, volunteering for Republican Mitt Romney. An Iraq war veteran forced into bankruptcy after losing her job as a paralegal, Chew said a new president is needed to help people like her who are struggling against the weak economy.

"I know every day what people are going through as far as the discouragement from hitting walls upon walls upon walls. I'm living proof of it," said Chew, 42. "If I can do something to push the country forward by helping Mitt Romney out, then I'm going to be here making phone calls."

Call them passionate, idealistic, earnest, even a tad naive: The volunteers helping to power the Obama and Romney campaigns are outliers at a time when polls show record low public satisfaction with government and a growing belief that Washington isn't on their side. While motivated by opposing goals, the volunteers have at least one thing in common: an abiding faith in the political process and a belief that who occupies the White House still matters.

Surveys, however, show that many voters don't share that optimism.

An Associated Press-GfK poll taken in June found less than half of adults say the outcome of the Nov. 6 election will make a great deal or a lot of difference on three key issues: the economy, unemployment and the federal budget deficit.

Yet the volunteers soldier on.

"My best friend's father gave me grief for coming here today," said Liesa Collins, a Virginia Commonwealth University freshman volunteering at Obama campaign headquarters in Richmond, Va. "I grew up in a community that's way more rich people, the Republican side of things. So it's nice to be here at this office and making a difference."

Both sides rely heavily on volunteer labor even as spending on high-priced staples like TV ads, polling and consultants keeps rising. Indeed, many of a campaign's most labor intensive tasks ? from staffing offices and making telephone calls to knocking on doors and registering voters ? are done by volunteers.

In Ohio, the Romney campaign plans a "Buckeye Blitz" on Saturday aimed at getting volunteers to knock on 30,000 doors in a single day. Two high-profile Romney supporters, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, recently gave a pep talk to grass-roots leaders in the state stressing the importance of volunteer efforts.

"We're a little bit behind the Obama people" in terms of on-the-ground organizing, Portman said. "But we're catching up fast," he assured the volunteers. "We have a lot of momentum on our side."

Both campaigns said they didn't know how many volunteers work for them. But each side often tries to discredit the other's volunteer programs, particularly in battleground states like Florida and Virginia that are likely to help decide the election.

The rival camps also bicker over who has the most intense volunteer corps.

"Volunteers are coming out of the woodwork," said Rich Beeson, Romney's political director. "It's not just your normal Republican base volunteers. It's a lot of new people who haven't been involved in politics before. We'll take anyone who wants to replace this president."

Obama's 2008 campaign set an unprecedented standard for grass-roots involvement, creating MyBarackObama.com ? an online platform to harness volunteer energy ? and attracting an army of volunteers by casting his candidacy as a cause. "This election is not about me, it's about you," Obama told audiences then, often to thunderous applause.

After he was elected, supporters tried to channel that volunteer energy into Organizing for America, a grass-roots effort run by the Democratic National Committee to mobilize support for Obama's policies. But the group never quite made good on its promise to develop a ground-level strategy for pushing his priorities as president.

Today, even the most ardent Obama backers acknowledge that incumbency and a limping economy have caused excitement about his re-election effort to ebb. Obama has acknowledged it himself, saying the campaign this year isn't as "sexy" as it was four years ago.

First lady Michelle Obama tried to rekindle a sense of mission on a recent visit to Dale City, Va., where she implored volunteers to give it their all.

"Making all those phone calls, registering voters, giving people the information they need on issues they care about ? that work is at the core of everything we do," she said. "It's not just that we support one extraordinary man ... we are doing it because of the values and the vision for the country we all share."

The sense of shared values brought Costa Rica native Gina Bonewit into the Obama campaign office in St. Petersburg, where she said she now spends 15 hours a week making phone calls.

"The president has done a good job trying to rebuild. That's what guides me here," said Bonewit, 37, pointing to Obama's health care law and support for equal pay for women as reasons she continues to volunteer.

Obama's recently announced support for gay marriage helped motivate Mindy Bertram to get involved. The 19-year old Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore said she expected young people to back the president as forcefully as they did in 2008, when Obama won two-thirds of voters under age 30.

"I feel strongly about this campaign, especially as a young voter," Bertram said. "I believe Barack Obama is fighting for middle-class families and for everyone to have opportunities."

Not surprisingly, Romney's supporters express far different views of the president when describing their decisions to volunteer.

Matt Gagnon, who said he spends 20 hours a week doing digital work for the Virginia Republican Victory Fund, said concern about the economy and his 5-year old son's future led him to volunteer.

"I don't believe the president has any capability of managing the economy in any way, shape or form," said Gagnon, 31. "Gov. Romney has a good handle on it. The contrast is pretty strong."

In St. Petersburg, Fla., retired web designer Dorine McKinnon said she spends two days a week volunteering for Romney because she is frightened by Obama and Democratic leaders. She believes they are hostile to business.

"They don't seem to understand that when businesses make money, the employees of that business make money," said McKinnon, 59. She said: "Obama says things are getting better. But that's not what I'm seeing."

Metropolis Restored: A Sci-Fi Cinematic Masterpiece Is Whole Once Again [Video]

Metropolis is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, telling the tale of class warfare and uprising in a dystopic society that has been spurred by an cyborg fashioned in the likeness of an aristocrat's dead wife. But the version the vast majority of us had seen was not the original cut that German director Fritz Lang had submitted to studios; rather it was a considerably shortened version that had been slowly restored—but never completed—over the years. Then in 2008, a discovery was made. More »

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi takes the oath of office Saturday before Egypt's highest court as the country's first freely elected president, succeeding Hosni Mubarak who was ousted 16 months ago.

When sworn in before the Supreme Constitutional Court, Morsi will also be the Arab world's first freely elected Islamist leader and Egypt's fifth president since the overthrow of the monarchy some 60 years ago.

The court, housed in a Nile-side structure built to resemble an ancient Egyptian temple, stands next door to a military hospital to which Mubarak, 84, was transferred about two weeks ago after suffering a health scare in a nearby prison hospital. He is serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of protesters during last year's uprising.

Morsi took a symbolic oath on Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of the 2011 uprising, before tens of thousands of mostly Islamist supporters.

A U.S.-trained engineer, the 60-year-old Morsi was scheduled to deliver his inauguration speech at Cairo University, established in 1908 as a bastion of secular education but which became a stronghold of Islamist student groups in the 1970s. Many of those student leaders have gone on to become senior members of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, the nation's oldest and most powerful Islamist movement.

A handover ceremony hosted by the military generals who ruled Egypt since Mubarak's ouster follows.

Morsi's Friday speech in Tahrir Square was filled with dramatic populist gestures. The 60-year-old president-elect staked a claim to the legacy of the uprising and voiced his determination to win back the powers stripped from his office by the generals.

Addressing a crowd that repeatedly shouted, "We love you Morsi!" he began his speech by joining them in chanting, "Revolutionaries and free, we will continue the journey." Later he opened his jacket wide to show that he was not wearing a bullet-proof vest. "I fear no one but God and I work for you," he told the cheering supporters. As he was leaving the podium, he pushed aside two army soldiers from his security detail to wave goodbye to the crowd.

"Everybody is hearing me now. The government ... the military and the police. ... No power above this power," he told the crowd. "I reaffirm to you I will not give up any of the president's authorities. I can't afford to do this. I don't have that right."

Morsi's defiant tone, however, could not conceal that by agreeing to take the oath before the court, rather than before parliament as is customary, he was bowing to the military's will.

The generals dissolved the Islamist-packed legislature after the same court that will swear him in Saturday ruled that a third of its members were elected illegally.

The military has also declared itself the legislative power. It gave itself control over the drafting of a new constitution and sidelined Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, which had sought to influence the process by packing it with Islamists.

The generals also created a National Security Council to formulate key domestic and foreign policies. Military officers outnumber civilians sitting on the council by about two-to-one, and decisions are made by a simple majority.

In his Friday speech, Morsi repeatedly returned to his main themes ? the will of the people, the importance of unity and sticking to the goals of last year's revolution.

He promised to reject any efforts to take away the "power of the people," telling his supporters: "You are the source of legitimacy and whoever is protected by anyone else will lose."

BABY SHOWER RECIPES | Tots and Teens

A baby shower is a kind of party that celebrates and welcomes a new member to the family. In this tradition, expectant parents usually receive gifts or money for their expected child, which, in a way, supports the parents by helping them get the things that they need for their baby (or the things that they may not be able to afford).

Baby showers are generally held in the later stages of pregnancy (in the last 2 months, for instance). There are, however, certain cultural beliefs that make people purposefully wait for the baby to arrive before having a baby shower. Adoptive parents, at times, wait until after the adoption is final and the baby has arrived in their home.

Baby showers are generally organized by close friends, relatives, or co-workers of the expectant parents (because baby showers center on gift-giving, it is considered inappropriate for a family member to host such events).

In its early form, baby showers were held exclusively for mothers-to-be, and only women were invited to attend the party. In addition, baby showers were traditionally held only for the first child. Today, however, many people arrange baby showers for both parents, and they can now be also arranged for every succeeding children (even children who have been adopted).

Activities in a baby shower typically include games, special activies, presents, and, most especially, food.

Below are some of the most common baby shower recipes:

English muffins
Parmesan cheese

1. Mix 2-3 tbsp of pizza sauce with 2-3 tbsp of cottage cheese.

2. Spread the mixture onto one half of the English muffin.

3. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese.

4. Broil for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve.

? Cheese Balls

? lb cheese (cheddar or grated)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 pack cream cheese
4 oz Tabasco sauce
2 tsp onion
Chopped nuts
2 tsp catsup or chili sauce

1. Mix all ingredients together using a mixer or a food processor (the cheese should be at room temperature).

2. Empty mixed ingredients on small bowls lined with plastic wrap.

3. Refrigerate overnight.

4. To serve, remove wrap and sprinkle with nuts. Serve with assorted crackers.

? Chicken Puffs

4 tbsp butter
? cup boiling water
? cup flour
2 eggs
? cup shredded cheese
2 cups cooked chicken
2 tbsp olives
2 tbsp wine
? cup mayonnaise

1. Melt butter in boiling water.

2. Add flour.

3. Stir vigorously until mixture forms a ball.

4. Remove from heat and cool slightly.

5. Add egg and beat briskly until smooth.

6. Stir in cheese.

7. Scoop 1 tsp dough into a greased baking sheet.

8. Preheat oven to 400?F.

9. Bake the puffs for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, cool, and split.

10. Combine the remaining ingredients with the finely chopped cooked chicken, pimiento, and olives.

11. Fill each puff with 2 tsp of the mixture. Serve.

There are just some of the baby shower recipes, there are numerous others to choose from ? from sandwiches & finger foods, to snacks and dips and sweets ? appetizing, yet simple and very easy to prepare.

PEOPLE LIKE US ? DreamWorks Pictures Movie Review ? 5 ...

Lolli here?

Every once in a while, a movie sneaks up on me and completely catches me off guard.

People Like Us was like that for me. I knew the basic story line before I saw it last week. I had seen the trailer. But I honestly didn?t give it much thought before sitting down in the theater to see a screening.

Here?s the basic run-down on People Like Us:

People Like Us Synopsis

From DreamWorks Pictures comes ?People Like Us,? a drama/comedy about family, inspired by true events, starring Chris Pine (?Star Trek?) as Sam, a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman, whose latest deal collapses on the day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home, where he must put his father?s estate in order and reconnect with his estranged family. In the course of fulfilling his father?s last wishes, Sam uncovers a startling secret that turns his entire world upside down: He has a 30-year-old sister Frankie whom he never knew about (Elizabeth Banks). As their relationship develops, Sam is forced to rethink everything he thought he knew about his family?and re-examine his own life choices in the process.

Have you seen the trailer yet?

The two main characters, Sam and Frankie, are people like us ? imperfect and struggling. They take the viewer on an emotional roller coaster that leaves everyone laughing one moment and tearing up the next.

There are no special effects. No action. No exotic set. The beauty of People Like Us is in the PEOPLE. Regardless of family situation or dynamics, this movie seems to hit a chord with everyone who sees it. I found myself tearing up several times during the movie, but what surprised me most was that the entire theater was misty-eyed (including the men in attendance) as the final credits rolled. It?s hard not to get wrapped up in the story and become virtually lost in Sam and Frankie?s life.

People Like Us will leave you thinking about family, friends, and what is important. It will make you consider the quality of the time spent with your own kids, and might just motivate you to open up and reach out to someone you haven?t talked to in a while.

Check out a few motivational #PeopleLikeUs quotes on family, friends, and what matters most.

Disclosure: I attended a screening of People Like Us while I was in LA last week. My travel expenses were covered, but all thoughts about my experiences and the movies that I watched are my own.
