i-SODOG robot unveiled, dares you to resist its LED-puppy dog eyes

Takara Tomy's i-SODOG might not be as intimidating as other robotic quadrupeds, but it sure is a charmer. Freshly unveiled at the Tokyo International Toy Show, the puppy comes laden with touch sensors, 15 custom servos and a microphone, letting its master command it with up to 50 unique voice cues. The mechanical mutt's mind packs some basic artificial intelligence as well, allowing it to learn and modify its behavior based on the user's commands. If the pup flunks out of digital dog training, however, its owner can always assume control directly with the i-SODOG iOS / Android app or from a dedicated controller. Fido's chasing a Spring 2013 release for 31,500 yen ($400), but there's no word on a release outside of Japan. In the meantime, a video of the plastic pooch in action awaits you after the break.

Obama, world want bold signs from Europe at G-20

CHICAGO (AP) ? With global anxiety rising, President Barack Obama is searching for bolder, swifter signals from Europe that it will contain its financial mess and keep it from torpedoing the U.S. economy and his re-election chances along with it.

Yet as he prepares for summit talks beginning Monday in Mexico with the other world leaders, Obama is down to the power of persuasion and little else.

A looming, perilous Greek election and Europe's internal politics are controlling the debate.

Given the teetering global economy and the breadth of leaders about to gather in the coastal resort of Los Cabos, the Group of 20 summit meeting carries the weight of expectations it is not likely to meet. Most of its members are not part of Europe and they have no power to drive how the continent manages its crisis, although do they come looking for signs of progress and urgency.

That clearly is the case for Obama, locked in a tight election that may be decided singlehandedly by whether U.S. job growth sinks or climbs over the next five months.

While economic challenge will dominate the summit, the agenda runs deeper.

In talks on the sidelines, Obama will confront the bloodshed in Syria and the nuclear threat in Iran. He will meet with Vladimir Putin, who has returned to the presidency of Russia. Their talks will be scrutinized, given tense U.S.-Russian political relations and deep divisions over Syria.

Obama was to head to Mexico on Sunday night after a weekend with his family in their hometown of Chicago. The summit runs Monday and Tuesday.

Europe's entangled financial crisis, from debt woes in Greece to banking trouble in Spain and high unemployment all around, has become the single biggest threat to the U.S. economic recovery. The signs of worry are clear at the White House and in the words of Obama, who can draw a straight line from the fate of Europe's economic strength to his chances of a second term.

Obama is prodding European leaders to give world markets some confidence, and fast.

"Obviously, this matters to us because Europe is our largest economic trading partner," Obama said. "If there's less demand for our products in places like Paris or Madrid, it could mean less business for manufacturers in places like Pittsburgh or Milwaukee. The good news is there is a path out of this challenge. These decisions are fundamentally in the hands of Europe's leaders."

He wants to emerge from Mexico with signs that the European players at the table, led by Germany, are moving on their own agenda. That means pursuing a banking union to match the monetary union linking the eurozone, taking steps to keep borrowing costs down in the weakest nations and injecting life into economies with growth plans involving public money.

Or in short, as Treasury Undersecretary Lael Brainard put it, the focus in Mexico will be "ensuring our European partners are escalating their response" to stabilizing a dicey situation.

"The stakes are high for all of us," she said.

The agenda threatens to be upended by the outcome of Sunday's election in Greece.

In choosing a new government for their debt-drowning nation, Greek voters are deciding whether to stick with the deeply unpopular austerity terms of an international bailout package or reject them. If they do the latter, that could lead Greece to default and get booted out of the eurozone, which could cause panic and destabilize the world's financial system.

Here, too, Obama has tried to hold sway from abroad.

"It is in everybody's interest for Greece to remain in the eurozone while respecting its commitment to reform," he said. "We recognize the sacrifices that the Greek people have made. ... But the Greek people also need to recognize that their hardships will likely be worse if they choose to exit from the eurozone."

Of the G-20 collection of emerging and economic giants, only Germany, Italy and France are in the 17-nation eurozone at the center of the crisis. European leaders point to a different summit of their own, to be held in Brussels at the end of June, as the more appropriate time to watch for action on a crisis response plan.

Given that dynamic, Obama officials have worked to keep expectations in check.

"Los Cabos will not be the final word on the eurozone," said Mike Froman, deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs.

Even beyond Europe, from Asia to the Americas, the economy is softening and fears are soaring.

The G-20 is meant to serve as the premier voice of economic coordination, representing not just traditional powers but emerging economies. Its members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union.

Obama's advisers do see the G-20 as a chance for the European nations to add some definition to their plans and show how they will put aside sovereign concerns to avoid calamity.

That pressure can help, said Matthew Goodman, who formerly oversaw the G-20 planning for Obama as director of international economics on the National Security Council staff.

"If you have to go into a meeting with peers and explain yourself, it gives the Europeans some ammunition when they have to try to sell these changes domestically," said Goodman, a specialist in political economy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "They can say, 'This is what the world expects.'"

Huawei M660 wields portrait keyboard, headed for Cricket Wireless

After the familiar vertical keyboard structure of a BlackBerry, but with all the Google friendliness and app breadth of an Android phone? Then Huawei may have the answer -- and it looks like it'll land on the US carrier, Cricket. According to leaked photos sent to PhoneArena, the Huawei M660 is modestly equipped with Android 2.3 and a portrait QWERTY keyboard nestled below a 3.2-inch display. Its existence is backed up by a page on the manufacturer's site, pointing to a (now non-existent) user guide that references expandable microSD storage, the possibility that it may arrive as the Ascend Q, and name-drops Cricket in the process. For those with portrait keyboard needs, you can hit up the link below for a few more shots of the device.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? As quick as Tiger Woods grabbed the U.S. Open lead he lost it

To a 17-year-old qualifier, no less.

Going from a first pump to dropping his clubs all over the course, Woods birdied the par-3 third to take a one-shot lead Friday before rolling off three straight bogeys to fall three shots behind 17-year-old Beau Hossler. Woods was 2-over par through eight holes in the second round and 1 over for the tournament.

Hossler made up two strokes in three holes, including a birdie on the par-4 first ? which played tougher than any hole on the course in the opening round. He was 2 under through 11 holes and the championship.

The kid from Rancho Santa Margarita down the California coast survived local and sectional qualifying at nearby Daly City, the second straight year he sneaked into this major. Now he's giving a 14-time major champion all he can handle.

That's the kind of week it has been so far at The Olympic Club.

Jim Furyk shot a 1-under 69 to move to 1 under for the 36-hole clubhouse lead. Michael Thompson, the leader after 18 holes, was 5 over for the day and three strokes back of Hossler.

Top-ranked Luke Donald and defending champion Rory McIlroy were likely going to miss the cut in what would be swift and stunning exits.

Donald came to the U.S. Open with six wins in the past 18 months, more than any other player. Last year, the 34-year-old Englishman pulled off an unprecedented feat by topping the money lists on both the PGA and European tours.

Now he'll probably miss the weekend for the third time in nine U.S. Open starts.

Donald followed his birdie-free 79 ? which even 14-year-old qualifier Andy Zhang matched Thursday ? with a less erratic second round. He had five bogeys and three birdies to card a 72, leaving him at an eye-popping 11 under and still without a major.

"That's the one part of my golfing resume in the last few years, especially, that I need to continually address and continually improve," Donald said. "I want to win one more than any of you guys know."

McIlroy's slide might be even more startling.

He mixed five bogeys ? including one on his final hole ? with a pair of birdies for a second-round 73. The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland shattered U.S. Open records last June at rain-softened Congressional, finishing at 268 to break the 72-hole record by four shots, and his 16-under total was four better than Woods' mark at Pebble Beach in 2000.

What a pushover that course turned out to be.

Olympic Club has restored "golf's toughest test" and then some.

The tight, twisting fairways on the unleveled Lake Course had most of the field hacking out of rough and digging into sand for shots. Others searched for balls in the colossal cypress trees or pushed putts all over the rock-hard greens.

Sergio Garcia, who reached the green in two on the 11th, was so upset when he missed a 5-foot putt to make bogey that he took a half-swing at the ball and yelled a couple of cuss words.

The two accomplished left-handers in Woods' group, Mickelson and Masters champion Bubba Watson also faced the prospect of missing the cut entering the second round. Mickelson opened with a 76, and Watson shot 78.

At least they still had a round to play.

Calm and cool conditions under a light layer of fog provided a majestic backdrop of San Francisco's steep hills when the first groups teed off shortly after 7 a.m. A blue sky and warmer ? but still crisp ? temperatures followed, speeding those already fast and fickle fairways.

It could be the last time most players enjoy the serene setting.

The U.S. Golf Association decided this year to eliminate the 10-shot rule in which players within 10 strokes of the lead make the cut. Starting at this year's championship, the cut will be the top 60 and ties.

The cut line started was at 5 over or better when the first morning groups finished. In all likelihood, it will be at least 7 over.

USGA executive director Mike Davis said the idea behind the new rule was to limit the number of players making the cut ? 108 did so Oakland Hills in 1996 ? and prevent slow play that could perhaps force a two-tee start in threesomes.

Not that Woods will need to worry about that.

Woods was in control in the first round, finding fairways, sticking greens and avoiding the thick rough and towering trees that line the course built on the side of a hill that separates the Pacific Ocean from Lake Merced. He had consecutive birdies late in his round, including a 35-foot putt that banged into the back of the cup on No. 5.

Buttermilk Scones | Feeding Time Blog

June 14, 2012 ? 5:20 pm

Kirstie Allsop hosts a TV show called in ?Made in Britain?. It is basically an outlet for over-achievement. She tries her hand, guided by experts, at all kinds of craft and baking and enters the results in small town fairs, where she usually wins some kind of prize amongst people who have been plugging away for years. It sounds like I don?t like her or the show much, but I do. I really like her, she isn?t afraid to reveal her competitive streak, which I understand all too well. My family call it the ?Monica gene? (from Friends) and unfortunately we all suffer from it. Board games in my family never went down very well.

So I was watching one episode where she was making scones. I heard the chef who was helping her, mention an ingredient that he uses to hold the mixture together and achieve that spongy texture. My ears pricked up at that because I had always thought my scones were rather crumbly, but as usual I missed what he said ? probably because AT was talking. Mum?s always said my scones remind her of her mother?s scones. Probably because I use the Edmonds Cookery book recipe, which is a New Zealand publication and she grew up in New Zealand.

After the show I Googled like mad and found the recipe from the show that chef Richard Hunt uses at his restaurant in Torquay. The secret ingredient was milk powder. He also uses buttermilk, which I found made slightly sour scones. But his recipe did indeed produce a less crumbly result. I have included his method here, but I made it the way I always do (which is whiz together flour, salt and baking powder to mix, then add butter till I get ?fine breadcrumb texture?. Then I transfer to bowl and cut in the liquid with a knife till just combined) and got good results. I even tried cutting the scones out this time, as they do here in England. I usually leave the dough in a heap on a tray, and cut the dough with a big knife, creating rough scone shapes. But these round ones looked neat and tidy. It is a good recipe, I would recommend it. But there is something I like about my old scones. I like their odd shape and bumpy texture. As long they?re light and fluffy, they?re good scones in my book. They really just provide an opportunity to scarf inappropriately enormous lashings of jam and cream. I?m sure we all agree on that point.

Richard Hunt?s Scone Recipe

Ingredients:

500g plain flour
65g caster sugar
? tsp salt
60g butter
30g baking powder
65g milk powder
250ml buttermilk

Oven 210C

Method:

In a bowl put the flour, sugar, salt, butter, baking powder and milk powder and rub it together with your fingertips until it turns cream coloured and slightly crumbly. The odd fleck of butter is not a bad thing.

Add the buttermilk then stir this into the flour. Bring together into a firm ball of dough, and knead lightly for 10-15 seconds ? no more or the dough will be tough.

Flour the surface again and the top of the dough and roll to 4cm thick. Cut into rounds using an 8cm round cutter. A quick downward cut will give you the best rise in the oven.

Place on a parchment lined tray a few centimetres apart and bake for 15-20 minutes until risen and lightly coloured.

Man claims prosthetic leg caught by shrimp boat

Matt Willingham, owner of the shrimp boat Michele Dawn, looks for identifying features on a prosthetic leg at his dock in Valparaiso, Fla.

A man who lost his $30,000 prosthetic leg while swimming Memorial Day weekend plans to get it back Monday thanks to a?Florida shrimp boat captain.

Matt Willingham, who owns the Michele Dawn shrimp boat and Willingham Seafood, told the Northwest Florida Daily News that he thought he had caught a body when he first saw a foot about 2:30 a.m. Thursday while shrimping in the Choctawhatchee Bay between Fort Walton Beach and Destin.?Then he realized that the foot was part of a prosthetic limb.

"We've caught (portable toilets), boat trailers and crab traps," Willingham told the Daily News. "This was the first to catch a prosthetic leg."

The Soleus limb wore a Keen water sandal in what appeared to be a size 9 or 10, the Daily News reported.

The leg is emblazoned with the logo, motto and wildcat mascot from the University of Kentucky airbrushed on the molded knee. It came up in Willingham?s turtle excluder, the Daily News reported. Willingham said that if the limb had been in the water longer, it would have been covered with barnacles.

Willingham reached out to local media and authorities, who thought the worst.

Fred Robinson, a Crestview, Fla., resident and native of Radcliff, Ky., stepped forward to claim his leg.

"Ain?t nobody dead," Robinson said, according to WildcatWorld.com. "Just give me back my leg."

Robinson lost the prosthetic limb while out boating, WildcatWorld reported. When Robinson jumped out of the boat to swim, the water current sucked the prosthetic limb out from under him and out of his reach before he could gain control of it. He had given up all hope of ever seeing the leg, he told the WildcatWorld.

Robinson, who played for the University of Kentucky football team in the '80s,?lost his natural leg to a work-related accident in 2007 and had moved to Florida recently to continue his recovery, WildcatWorld reported.

He was scheduled to pick up the leg Friday, but his reunion with it was delayed to Monday.
