Learn Why Disabilities Don't Have To Stop You ... - Health - EzineMark

Many people all over the world suffer from disabilities and they become depressed and angry at the fact that they think they are limited when it comes to what they can achieve in life. There has long been a ridiculous and politically incorrect stereotype present that enables disabled people to feel less part of society and less likely to reach their life long dreams and targets. Some people assume that just because someone has a disability that they are incapable of learning and progressing in life, this is so untrue and it's offensive to have and hold these views, people with disabilities still have the ability to learn and evolve in life and they can do so very effectively in the right environment and with the right help. The stereotypes about disabilities needs to be extinguished as they are nothing but stereotypes, and they are stopping disabled people from progressing and achieving more in life.

All can be put right if people with disabilities show that they are able to reach their life goals and achieve them with ease through the right care and assistance.

There are many different types of disabilities people have and the achievements and targets that people want to succeed in will depend on the type of disability that person has. For some disabled people they realize and accept the fact that they may not ever be able to do certain things, and that they may not be able achieve certain results but instead of focusing on what they cannot achieve, why not show them a new direction on what they can. Each persons path in life is different no matter what your abilities are or talents, some people who are less able will achieve way more than those who in life through sheer determination and hunger. Too many people take for granted in life what they have and others don't and the only time they realize this is when they've met a disabled person trying to do something out of the ordinary, or they themselves succumb to any injury that causes them to have a disability.

So where are the right places for disabled people to learn how to achieve more in life and reach their full potentials? There are places for people who have Disabilities In Austin Texas where classes and carers show and teach people with disabilities how to move forward in life. Classes and individuals are taught in the perfect manner for them so that everything works and the student can understand lessons and put them into real life action. New skills, talents and trades can all be learnt through these classes as there's nothing that can't be achieved in life.

It's essential that you find the right disability center to learn from in Austin Texas as the environment, atmosphere and teachers themselves must resonate with you so that you can learn in the most effective and professional manner. Rid the stereotypes from the world about people with disabilities today and enroll yourself or the person intended into a disability teaching program.

Dylan Ratigan: Sustainability = Security: The Next Mission for America's Vets

As our nation starts to draw down the wars overseas, over a million vets will be re-entering civilian life over the next five years -- one of the largest in our country's recent history.

This Memorial Day weekend, we are focusing on the next mission facing our war heroes. We all know our service members and returning vets are committed to our national security -- but as they return home, that mission extends beyond the battlefield, as vets work to ensure that future generations never go to war over resources.?The need for sustainable energy and sustainable food are what many of the wars around the world are fought over now -- our returning marines know it, and they're doing something about it.

Watch as Dylan Ratigan talks about the connection between vets, jobs, sustainability and security with Liz Perez of GC Green, and John Hofmeister, former CEO of Shell Oil and founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy, as well as some amazing veterans he met on the road on the West Coast who are working for change.

Voxeo Labs Launches Phono Mobile ? Easily Add HD Voice and IM ...

Browse > Home / News / Voxeo Labs Launches Phono Mobile ? Easily Add HD Voice and IM to iOS and Android Apps

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) July 22, 2011

Voxeo Labs, the open-source and developer-focused innovation division of Voxeo, today announced the immediate availability of Phono Mobile. The Phono Mobile toolkit leverages Javascript and HTML5 to enable high-quality voice and instant messaging features on millions of mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and any Android 2.1+ phones and tablets.

Developers can use Phono Mobile to build apps that enable interaction via voice and chat quickly and easily. For example:

Mobile gamers can easily speak or chat with each other directly within the games they play, with high-quality HD audio and without using carrier voice minutes. HD voice delivers fidelity far beyond a normal phone call and makes players sound like they are in the same room as other gamers.

Customer relationship management (CRM) providers can deliver in-app features to talk or chat with customers.

Social platforms can add a button to instantly create a conference call incorporating all members of a group.

iOS and Android apps using Phono Mobile can even receive real phone calls from regular phones, SIP voice-over-IP (VoIP) clients, Skype users or other Phono users.

Additionally, Phono Mobile unlocks communication for non-phone devices such as the iPad, iPod Touch and Android tablets. Users of those devices can make or receive phone calls and chat conversations even though their device does not include an actual phone component. Even better, the voice calls can use HD voice to offer a far superior listening experience than traditional phone calls.

Phono Mobile builds on the phenomenal success of the Phono SDK, a JavaScript jQuery plugin that lets developers add voice and text chat to web browser-based applications using only a few lines of code. Nearly 10,000 developers - including two of the largest mobile carriers in the world - are using Phono to deploy applications ranging from customer service to crisis response. Applications written with Phono Mobile can also run within any desktop web browser - including Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Safari - on Windows or Mac OS X.

Phono Mobile opens up the world of voice and chat communications to any mobile developer who knows how to use JavaScript and HTML5, said Jason Goecke, VP of Innovation for Voxeo Labs. Developers can now create iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android apps that connect users directly using voice or chat.

Built on the open industry standards of HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, XMPP, and SIP, Phono Mobile uses the PhoneGap application platform from Nitobi Software to create apps for iOS and Android that can be submitted to the respective app stores for purchase or download by mobile users.

Phono Mobile is a perfect example of how PhoneGap can enable a developer to create one app and deploy it across multiple platforms, said Andre Charland, CEO, Nitobi Software, Were looking forward to seeing how developers enhance their mobile apps now that they can add audio and IM communication.

Phono Mobile works on an iOS or Android phone or tablet using either a WiFi or 3G data connection. Apps using Phono Mobile can also connect to Voxeos Tropo.com cloud communications service to make use of speech recognition and text-to-speech in 24 languages, call recording, conferencing, phone number transfers, SIP, XMPP/Jingle, iNum and Skype connections as well as the ability to add communication to public instant messaging networks including GTalk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber and social networks like Twitter.

Phono Mobile and the Phono SDK are licensed under an open source license and the source code is freely available for further modification.

Anxiety Disorders | health article

While it may be hard to find someone who has not experienced some form of anxiety in their life, there are those whose anxiety never fades which can make it impossible for suffers to lead a normal life. When the ability to participate in certain events or go to certain places is prevented by an unshakable fear of things that could possibly occur many find themselves becoming reclusive instead of enjoying the life they once led. When dealing with anxiety disorder, you have first to realize that you are not alone. This is due to our current standard lifestyle, which is forerunner of stress and the related anxiety and panic disorders. So it?s not difficult to understand that anxiety disorders are widespread. In fact, according to statistics, they affect about 13% of world?s population; more, there is 2 or 3 percent women than men affected by stress disorders.

If your anxiety is more severe or constant, then therapy or counseling may become the best option. Cognitive behavioral therapy for one has been confirmed to be very effective in the treatment of all types of anxiety disorder. In this therapy you work one on one with an experienced and qualified mental health professional, who will assist you to deal with your fears in a safe and controlled environment. In more persistent cases it can be damaging for sufferers and restrict them from enjoying life. If effective treatment is not sought, these disorders can significantly decrease an individual?s productive activity and drastically reduce a person?s ability to lead a fulfilling and satisfying life.

Another center for the disorder is the Boston University Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders. The professionals there also conduct researches for a more effective treatment to patients. The researches they are conducting right now are classification of depression and anxiety project, treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, treatment for social anxiety disorder, and more. They usually study the condition of the patients and then treat them accordingly. Both the young and old are accommodated in the center, since they have specific programs like the program for the adults, the young ones and eating disorders.

(AP) ? The buzz at the start was for Allen Iverson's ceremonial return.

By the end, more than 20,000 fans were on their feet and going wild for Jrue Holiday, Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala and the rugged-and-determined play that kept the eighth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers alive for at least one more game.

Yes, the Sixers are talking about Game 7 ? and they're taking this improbable postseason run back to Boston.

Holiday scored 20 points, and Brand had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Sixers to an 82-75 victory over the Celtics on Wednesday night that tied the Eastern Conference semifinals.

No team has won consecutive games in a series where neither team has played well enough to seize control. But the Sixers were good enough to win Game 6, improving to 5-0 this postseason in games following a loss.

"Game 7," coach Doug Collins said. "That's all we wanted was to win tonight and give ourselves a chance to go into Boston and see what happens on Saturday."

Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo could be playing their last game together Saturday night if they can't find a way to hang onto the ball and put away a Sixers team that won't quit.

Boston has learned three times already how difficult that can be.

The fun started when the not-quite retired Iverson earned a roaring standing ovation when he presented the game ball.

It ended with the song, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," blasting through the arena.

"I want more," Collins said. "We're going to get greedy. We want more."

The Celtics posted ugly numbers across the board: Blame the loss on the 33 percent shooting, the 17 turnovers or the 3 for 14 3-point shooting. Either way, there's enough to go around. Pierce had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Garnett had 20 points and 11 boards.

"We found a way to stay in the game, for the most part," Pierce said.

They did because the Sixers again failed to put up the sparkling numbers in the box score usually required for a deep postseason run. They missed 8 of 9 3-pointers, shot a woeful 17 of 28 from the free throw line and had 12 turnovers.

But when the Sixers really needed that game-changing basket, there was Evan Turner twisting and fighting through defenders down the lane. When the Sixers needed a stop, there was Brand, ripping a rebound away from Boston, even with painful neck and shoulder injuries that keep him awake at night.

"When you get out there, you don't feel much," Brand said. "You've got the adrenaline flowing. You're banging and fighting. That's why Coach has confidence in me to play 34 minutes."

The Sixers wrote "Huddle Up and Fight" on their locker room chalkboard.

They did just that and are now one win away from reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2001.

Iverson was the MVP of that run.

Maybe a little of that ol' A.I. magic rubbed off in Game 6.

Unlike Game 5, when the Sixers collapsed in the third quarter and blew a lead, they suddenly found a groove in front of 20,403 fans.

The Sixers started hitting free throws, kept turnovers to a minimum (two), and fed the ball to a starting lineup that had been largely outproduced by a fantastic bench.

Turner was fouled on a go-ahead layup but missed from the line. That made the Sixers 5 of 13 while the Celtics were 14 for 14.

Iguodala split two defenders and threw down a ferocious dunk over Pierce to draw the foul. He made his first free throw after missing his first four and the Sixers led by five.

Pierce led the parade to the line for the Boston. He made his first 11 attempts for a Celtics team that was 17 for 17 through three quarters. The Celtics made only 19 field goals through three.

"We've got to move the ball and continue to play the defense that we've been playing," Pierce said.

The Sixers also couldn't find their way from the 3-point line and missed their first six attempts until Iguodala nailed one for a 58-52 lead.

Garnett caught some heat after calling Philly fans "fair weather" after Game 5 in Boston.

Well, the forecast called for thunderous cheers after Iguodala buried his 3.

That helped the Sixers take a 60-56 lead into the fourth and put them 12 minutes away from Game 7.

This time, the Sixers weren't blowing a lead.

Turner, who never met a clutch attempt he didn't like, went right-to-left on a drive down the lane for a nine-point lead. The 6-foot-4 Holiday brushed off the 4-inch difference and went high over Garnett for a one-handed bucket and an 11-point lead.

"Someone else was talking bad about our fans, so it was good to get this victory for them," Brand said.

While the Sixers swapped shot makers on almost every possession, the Celtics never found that third and fourth option behind Pierce and Garnett.

"We never really established Kevin," coach Doc Rivers said. "Even though Kevin had points, it wasn't the type of points we needed."

Rondo had tortured the Sixers over the first five games, but was limited to nine points (4 for 14 shooting) and six assists.

He'll need to return to form at home for the Celtics to have a chance at avoiding the upset.

"It's been a tough series. It's down to a Game 7," Garnett said. "We've played well at times, they've played well at times. But now, we'll take it home and see what we can do."

Iguodala and Turner scored 12 points. Lou Williams had 11 and the Sixers outscored Boston 42-16 in the paint.

"I just want our guys to play with no fear," Collins said.

Collins had the Sixers watch a highlight video from Game 7 of the 1982 Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday. The Sixers blew a 3-1 lead in that series and were forced to win Game 7 at Boston to reach the finals ? which they did.

Thirty years later, the Sixers get to try again.

Notes: Iverson cupped his hand to his ear and received the loudest ovation of the night. He watched the game from a suite and his eyes watered up when he was shown later in the game on the big screen as the crowd, thousands wearing a No. 3 jersey, went wild and chanted, "MVP!" Iverson posted on Twitter, "You can always come home again!!!" ... Celtics assistant coach Tyronn Lue was famously stepped over by Iverson in the 2001 NBA finals. ... Celtics G Avery Bradley (shoulder) sat out. Rivers said Bradley and Ray Allen are both considered day to day. ... Collins was stunned Iguodala was left off the NBA's all-defensive squad. Collins said Iguodala should have been "no worse than a second-team defender." ... Mickael Pietrus hit the only 3 of the half for either team at the buzzer to send the Celtics into the break ahead 36-33.

Seagrasses can store as much carbon as forests

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Seagrasses are a vital part of the solution to climate change and, per unit area, seagrass meadows can store up to twice as much carbon as the world's temperate and tropical forests.

So report researchers publishing a paper this week in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The paper, "Seagrass Ecosystems as a Globally Significant Carbon Stock," is the first global analysis of carbon stored in seagrasses.

The results demonstrate that coastal seagrass beds store up to 83,000 metric tons of carbon per square kilometer, mostly in the soils beneath them.

As a comparison, a typical terrestrial forest stores about 30,000 metric tons per square kilometer, most of which is in the form of wood.

The research also estimates that, although seagrass meadows occupy less than 0.2 percent of the world's oceans, they are responsible for more than 10 percent of all carbon buried annually in the sea.

"Seagrasses only take up a small percentage of global coastal area, but this assessment shows that they're a dynamic ecosystem for carbon transformation," said James Fourqurean, the lead author of the paper and a scientist at Florida International University and the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Florida Coastal Everglades Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) site.

The Florida Coastal Everglades LTER site is one of 26 such NSF LTER sites around the world in ecosystems from forests to tundra, coral reefs to barrier islands.

"Seagrasses have the unique ability to continue to store carbon in their roots and soil in coastal seas," said Fourqurean. "We found places where seagrass beds have been storing carbon for thousands of years."

The research was led by Fourqurean in partnership with scientists at the Spanish High Council for Scientific Investigation, the Oceans Institute at the University of Western Australia, Bangor University in the United Kingdom, the University of Southern Denmark, the Hellenic Center for Marine Research in Greece, Aarhus University in Denmark and the University of Virginia.

Seagrass meadows, the researchers found, store ninety percent of their carbon in the soil--and continue to build on it for centuries.

In the Mediterranean, the geographic region with the greatest concentration of carbon found in the study, seagrass meadows store carbon in deposits many meters deep.

Seagrasses are among the world's most threatened ecosystems. Some 29 percent of all historic seagrass meadows have been destroyed, mainly due to dredging and degradation of water quality. At least 1.5 percent of Earth's seagrass meadows are lost every year.

The study estimates that emissions from destruction of seagrass meadows can potentially emit up to 25 percent as much carbon as those from terrestrial deforestation.

"One remarkable thing about seagrass meadows is that, if restored, they can effectively and rapidly sequester carbon and reestablish lost carbon sinks," said paper co-author Karen McGlathery, a scientist at the University of Virginia and NSF's Virginia Coast Reserve LTER site.

The Virginia Coast Reserve and Florida Coastal Everglades LTER sites are known for their extensive seagrass beds.

Seagrasses have long been recognized for their many ecosystem benefits: they filter sediment from the oceans; protect coastlines against floods and storms; and serve as habitats for fish and other marine life.

The new results, say the scientists, emphasize that conserving and restoring seagrass meadows may reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon stores--while delivering important "ecosystem services" to coastal communities.

Anti-obesity proposal fails again at McDonald's
-->

(Reuters) ? McDonald's Corp. investors soundly rejected a shareholder proposal that would have required the world's biggest fast-food chain to assess its impact on childhood obesity.

The subject was a major topic of discussion at Thursday's annual shareholder meeting, which also served as a send-off for retiring Chief Executive Jim Skinner - whose nearly eight years at the helm will be remembered as a time when the price of McDonald's stock tripled.

The shareholder proposal, which also failed last year, returned amid growing concern over the social and financial costs of obesity in the United States and around the world - not only in terms of healthcare-related expenses but also lower worker productivity and diminished quality of life.

Nearly one-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese. America is one of the fattest nations on earth, and the Institute of Medicine, in a 2006 report requested by Congress, said junk food marketing contributes to an epidemic of childhood obesity that continues to rise. The institute is the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

McDonald's executives on Thursday defended the brand and its advertising.

"We're proud of the changes we've made to our menu. We've done more than anybody in the industry around fruits and vegetables and variety and choice," said Skinner, who will retire on June 30 and who received a standing ovation from investors.

McDONALD'S HEALTH FOOTPRINT

As one of the largest and most influential companies in the restaurant industry, McDonald's often bears the brunt of criticism from consumers, parents and healthcare professionals, who want it to serve healthier food and curb its marketing to children.

While the chain has added food like salads, oatmeal and smoothies to its menu, it has pulled ahead of rivals and delivered outsized returns for investors with help from its core lineup of fatty food and sugary drinks.

Corporate Accountability International, a business watchdog group, for the second year in a row backed the obesity proposal, which was endorsed by 2,500 pediatricians, cardiologists and other healthcare professionals.

It called on the company to issue a report on its "health footprint." The document would evaluate how diet-related illness would affect McDonald's profit.

In the time since the last shareholder vote, McDonald's has changed the contents of its popular Happy Meals for children - reducing the french fry portion by more than half and automatically including apples in every meal.

It also won the dismissal of a lawsuit that sought to stop the company from using free toys to promote its Happy Meals for children in California.

Dr Andrew Bremer, a pediatric endocrinologist and professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, presented the proposal at the meeting and said McDonald's has chosen to employ "countless new PR tactics" that create a perception of change while "unreasonably" exposing shareholders to significant risk.

"It is not enough to point to so-called healthier menu items when children are still the target of aggressive marketing of an overwhelming unhealthy brand," Bremer said.

McDonald's board of directors recommended a "no" vote on the proposal, calling it "unnecessary and redundant."

Shareholders heeded that call. The proposal received 6.4 percent of votes in support, up from 5.6 percent a year ago.

Incoming CEO Don Thompson, who said his two children eat at McDonald's, was forceful in his response to questions from Corporate Accountability representatives.

"I would never do anything to hurt them or any other children, nor would we as a corporation ... Do me the honor, and our entire organization, of not associating us with doing something that is damaging to children. We have been very responsible," Thompson said.

McDonald's stock was down 0.5 percent at $91.03 on Thursday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.
