Mormon faith may hurt Romney in primaries: poll (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? Mitt Romney's Mormonism could hurt the Republican candidate with evangelical voters in his fight for party's presidential nomination, but those voters would favor him over President Barack Obama in the general election, a poll released Wednesday concluded.

Some 15 percent of evangelical Christians, a key constituency in the Republican presidential nomination battle, say they are wary of Mormonism and will not vote for Mitt Romney, the poll found.

But those same voters were more likely to favor the former Massachusetts governor, a Mormon, in the November 2012 general election over President Barack Obama, whom they dislike more, the Pew Research Center poll conducted November 9-14 said.

"You do see the potential for Romney's Mormonism to have an impact on the primary campaign," said Pew research Greg Smith.

"Those who think Mormonism is not a Christian religion are more reticent about Romney and his candidacy. At the same time those people are the people who are the strongest critics of Barack Obama. Fully 92 percent of them say they have an unfavorable view of Obama," he said.

Nearly two out of three white evangelical Christian voters in the poll did not believe Mormonism is a Christian religion and 15 percent of evangelicals would not support Romney.

Evangelical Christians may account for 60 percent of the votes cast in two of the first four Republican nomination contests, the January 3 Iowa caucuses and the January 21 South Carolina primary.

Among the 480 likely Republican voters polled, which had a 5.5 percentage point margin of error, Romney led with support from 23 percent of the participants, followed by former businessman Herman Cain with 22 percent and former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich with 16 percent.

While Gingrich has risen in recent national polls and Cain has fallen, Romney has maintained support in the low- to mid-20s, near the top of the pack.

In the overall poll of 2,001 adults, which had a 3 point margin of error, 50 percent had a favorable view of Obama, 38 percent viewed Romney favorably, 33 percent had a favorable view of Gingrich, 31 percent liked Cain and 25 percent had a favorable view of Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Nearly nine of 10 Republican voters either did not know or did not care that Romney is a Mormon.

Half of likely Republican voters in the poll said Mormonism was a Christian religion, and one-third did not think so.

Romney did better in a head-to-head matchup with Obama than any of the other Republican candidates.

The fast-growing Mormon religion, formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith and is based in Utah. Mormons have three books of scripture other than the Bible, including the Book of Mormon which Mormons believe was translated from golden plates discovered by Smith. Their views depart from Christianity in several respects.

Avril Lavigne will join the likes of Cee Lo Green, "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" star Daniel Radcliffe, Mary J. Blige and Cobra Starship for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, airing live, as you might expect, on Turkey Day Thursday. The Goodbye Lullaby singer stopped by the MTV News offices to tease fans about what to expect from her come show day.

"I'm going to be performing on a float and singing my new single 'Wish You Were Here,' and I am planning on being very bundled up," she said, laughing. "And I've never performed in a parade before. Actually, I've been in a parade: I used to be a highland dancer in my hometown growing up, so I did stuff like that.

"I'm singing full on on a float — it's gonna be cool," she added. "New York right now, it's so pretty, and everyone's super getting into the holiday season, so I'm excited. I'm really happy to be a part of it."

A native Canadian, Lavigne already celebrated her country's Thanksgiving last month, but loves the chance to double up on the holiday once November rolls around.

"I'm Canadian, and our Canadian Thanksgiving is a month before yours," she said. "But I live here [in the U.S.], so I celebrate both. I do Thanksgiving twice a year, and it really depends on where I'm traveling and where I'm at, but I'm going to celebrate it this year, and I'm in the States. And I was with my family in Canada this year [for Canadian Thanksgiving], and we're gonna definitely do the whole friends and family sit-down, pig-out Thanksgiving."

Lavigne shared some dishes she likes to fill up on: "I like the potatoes. I like doing squash. If I ever cook it, I like doing butternut squash with rosemary. Sometimes you put brown sugar on it, if you want to be bad, and maple syrup, if you really want to be really bad. Butternut squash and stuffing."

Will you be watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday? Share your plans below!

China urges progress on climate change fund

(AP) ? China is worried the financial crisis is draining contributions to a multibillion-dollar global warming fund but hopes basic financing to help developing countries deal with climate change can be hammered out this month.

Delegates at a U.N.-sponsored climate change conference that starts Nov. 28 in Durban, South Africa, are to consider ways to raise $100 billion a year for the Green Climate Fund.

Xie Zhenhua, vice chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission and China's lead climate official, told a news conference in Beijing that some countries may not be able to pledge as much as originally planned but he hopes there will be progress in determining how the fund is allocated and managed in the long-term.

China is also pushing for new emissions-reduction targets for developed countries to take effect after the 1997 Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012.

Countries generally have fallen into camps of rich and poor on the issue. Developing countries insist the Kyoto obligations ? the individual targets for countries to cut emissions ? be extended and new targets adopted. Industrial countries say they want emerging economies to accept similar binding commitments.

Xie reiterated China's stance that developed countries are mainly to blame for the current global warming situation and must take the lead in combatting the problem, while developing countries should not have to face mandatory restraints on emissions because they would hamper efforts to alleviate poverty.

A white paper on China's climate change policies distributed at the news conference said clarifying a new emissions-reduction plan for developed countries was the most urgent task facing negotiators at Durban.

Also important will be securing "new, additional and abundant funds" for developing nations to deal with global warming, it said.

"Climate change hasn't become less important because of the international financial crisis, but it has become less prominent," Xie said. "Some people say that given the economic difficulties in Western countries these days, that it's not the proper time to discuss financing issues."

Xie said China understands that point of view but also believes global economic difficulties are temporary and that progress should be made at Durban on establishing the financing mechanisms for the fund. He said there are multiple options for financing but that the main source will be public funds from developed countries.

"If you have difficulties, for instance, you can donate less money, but the mechanism should be there and we hope, we look forward to positive progress in the allocation and management of these long-term financing mechanisms (in Durban)," Xie said.

China and other emerging economies exempted from the Kyoto pact have sharply increased emissions in recent years, while rejecting calls to commit by treaty to restraints on emissions.

However, China has voluntarily set a target of reducing power consumed per unit of economic output ? a measure known as "energy intensity" ? by 40 percent to 45 percent by 2020, compared with 2005 levels, while also increasing the share of energy produced by renewable sources to 15 percent and expanding forest cover.

Cops: Mom in love triangle kills 2 kids, self

Mary Ann Holder wanted to see her married former flame one last time as their bitter love triangle threatened to open a new and potentially costly chapter in court.

The meeting ended with Randall Lamb, 40, getting shot and Holder, 36, taking her own life Sunday. Later, police found that Holder gunned down four children living in her home, including her two sons, and the older boy's girlfriend. Two are dead. Three of the children survived and were in critical condition Monday.

Investigators were trying to unravel the violent chain of events and understand why Holder took out her rage on children. Holder left notes taking responsibility for the shootings and apologizing for the pain she was causing, Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes said. The notes also indicate Holder was angry about how her relationship with Lamb came to an end.

"They were obviously shot for the purpose of killing them. You can call it an execution, you can call it a shooting, you can call it whatever you want. The result is the same," he said. "We may never know exactly what her thoughts were and why."

Investigators said Holder and Lamb had been having an affair for almost four years and it was grinding to an acrimonious end.

In February, Lamb's wife, Jennifer, sought a court order to keep Holder away from her and her husband. Jennifer Lamb stated in the complaint that Holder would constantly call and text their cell phones and that Holder also sent nude pictures of herself. In June, Holder filed restraining orders against Lamb and his wife, saying they stalked and harassed her and that Lamb constantly drove past her house.

Authorities said Lamb agreed to meet Holder at a community college parking lot around 9 a.m. Sunday. His wife was about to file an alienation of affection lawsuit against Holder. North Carolina law allows a married person to sue the person with whom his or her spouse had an affair.

Holder shot at him multiple times and hit him once in the shoulder, the sheriff said. Lamb called his wife, who reported the shooting to 911 dispatchers. He was in stable condition on Monday.

Holder then drove off to pick up her 14-year-old son. Phone records indicate that about 45 minutes later, Zachary Smith was sending a text message thanking his hosts for letting him stay over the previous night.

Nearly half an hour later, a sheriff's deputy on the lookout for Holder's black SUV drove past it and turned around after seeing what he thought was a puff of smoke inside the vehicle. Holder was found dead inside with a gunshot to the head, and Zachary critically wounded was in the SUV's back seat. Deputies recovered two handguns inside the vehicle, one in Holder's lap, the sheriff said.

The officers then went into Holder's home in the Pleasant Garden community south of Greensboro and found Holder's son, 17-year-old Robert Dylan Smith, dead. Smith's girlfriend, Makayla Woods, 15, and Holder's nephew, Richard Suttles, 17, were also shot inside the home and were in critical condition Monday. Holder's niece, Hannaleigh Suttles. 8, died Monday.

The victims appeared to have been shot while they slept in a bedroom and the home's living room, said Barnes's chief deputy, Col. Randy Powers.

Holder's decision to take in her dead sister's children appeared to add to the pressures of what appeared to be a life in turmoil, neighbor Teresa Scott said.

"Why would you take them children, keep them children, when your life's rocky, up and down?" said Scott, who said Holder began renting the home across the street about four years ago.

Holder's children were kind and vigilant towards the elderly couple across the road, Teresa Scott said. They volunteered to help with yard maintenance and enquired about the health of her husband Joe, who has had recent health problems.

In the past, Lamb also appeared to like Holder's children, Teresa Scott said. "They'd pack up things and go places together," she said.

But it was also clear the affair between Holder and Lamb had become acrimonious, Teresa Scott said. Robert Smith posted no-tresspassing signs on trees in the front yard this year in response to the rising level of tension between Holder and Lamb, Scott said.

No one answered the door at Lamb's home or at the homes of neighbors at the end of long driveways.

The multiple shootings stunned law officers, Barnes said.

"We've got death. We've got drama. We've got a situation basically no one could ever imagine," Barnes said.

Avoid Procrastination by Changing "And" to "Or" [Mind Hacks]

Avoid Procrastination by Changing "And" to "Or"When we procrastinate, we're simply making excuses to ourselves to justify why we're not going to do what we need to do. CD Baby founder and human encyclopedia of useful life lessons Derek Sivers has a handy hack: just alter the language of your excuses by replacing "and" with "or."

He provides a simple example, asking when the time is right to go for a run:

"When is the time right?"

"When it's a nice day, and I've finished my work, and I haven't just eaten, and I'm feeling energetic."
"Repeat that last sentence, changing ?and' to ?or'."

"When it's a nice day, OR I've finished my work, OR I haven't just eaten, OR I'm feeling energetic."
"That sounds like a better plan."

It's definitely easier to meet a single condition than a series of them. Try changing your ands to ors and see if your excuses are easier to overcome.

Strategic collaboration agreement will bring scientists together to work toward new biologic options for cancer and other diseases

Leaders from the University of Michigan Medical School and MedImmune, the global biologics arm of AstraZeneca, have signed a new agreement to work together on a broad range of projects.

The three-year strategic collaboration will bring scientists from one of the nation's top medical research institutions together with scientists from one of the world's leading developers of biologic therapies.

UMMS and MedImmune scientists will cooperate on studies that aim to translate scientific discoveries from the laboratory into new candidates for treating cancer, heart disease, digestive disease, lung disease and diseases caused by inflammation.

This type of translational and pre-clinical research is designed to identify and confirm the specific molecules and genes involved in causing disease, and potential molecules and cell-based therapies to treat or prevent them.

"We are thrilled to partner with MedImmune in a collaborative and creative way to bring new innovations to market," says Steven Kunkel, Ph.D., senior associate dean for research at the U-M Medical School and Endowed Professor of Pathology Research. "This strategic partnership, one of the first of its kind for our institution, speaks to our desire to collaborate with industry to accelerate translation of U-M's cutting-edge research to impact patients."

The new agreement goes beyond the traditional type of academic-industry research relationship, in which companies fund projects such as clinical trials, or license patents on discoveries made by university scientists and develop them on their own. In this new type of agreement, scientists from medical schools and industry collaborate closely on projects while also preserving academic freedom, research integrity and both sides' rights to intellectual property for discoveries.

"This new horizon in industry-academic partnership ultimately benefits patients, who demand new and better options for treating diseases," says Norman Greenberg, Ph.D., MedImmune's Vice President for Oncology Research and Development. "New types of partnerships between academic biomedical powerhouses such as Michigan, and industry leaders such as MedImmune, are needed to accelerate the search for those options."

The initial focus on oncology leverages the strength of the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.

U-M cancer scientists, led by center director Max Wicha, M.D., have won more research grant dollars from the National Cancer Institute than researchers at any other academic medical center.

"Working with MedImmune to explore new ways to target treatments is a natural progression of the basic scientific discoveries that our teams have made in the last decade," says Wicha, who is also the Distinguished Professor of Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the U-M Medical School.

Former Mexico cartel leader's nephew indicted in Texas (Reuters)

MCALLEN, Texas (Reuters) ? A federal grand jury in Texas charged a powerful former cartel chief's nephew on Friday in a drug and money laundering conspiracy that stretched across the United States.

Rafael Cardenas Vela, 38, was arrested last month in South Texas, and has been held without bond. He is the nephew of Osiel Cardenas, the former leader of the brutal Gulf cartel, who was extradited to the United States in 2007 and is currently serving a 25-year sentence.

The indictment said Cardenas Vela has been an active player in the cartel since 2000, when he first assumed control of operations in San Fernando, in Tamaulipas state in northeast Mexico.

Since March, he has acted as chief of the cartel's hometown of Matamoros, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas, where he helped manage a distribution network that pushed narcotics to cities in the northern United States and returned the proceeds to Mexico, the indictment said.

Cardenas Vela was accused of having taken control of the gritty border city after a power struggle broke out in the cartel's ranks following the November 2010 slaying of another uncle, Antonio Cardenas Guillen, also known as "Tony the Storm."

U.S. and Mexican authorities are cooperating closely to clamp down on drug trafficking and cross-border crime from Mexico, where more than 44,000 people have been killed since President Felipe Calderon took office five years ago and sent the military to crush the drug cartels.

Jerry Robinette, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent in charge in San Antonio, Texas, said the agency had made "stability and security to this border region" a priority.

"Holding those responsible and accountable for these crimes is the first step," Robinette said in a statement.

While Mexican authorities have captured or killed a number of cartel kingpins in recent years, many of the gangs have splintered under the increased pressure.

Among key combatants battling for lucrative turf in northern Mexico is the Gulf cartel, which is now fighting the Zetas, its former paramilitary enforcers.

The indictment said Cardenas Vela used drug trafficking proceeds to bribe Mexican police officers and purchase bulletproof vehicles, firearms, grenades and homemade cannons used by the Gulf cartel in its fight against the Zetas.

U.S. federal authorities have also moved to seize $20 million in cash and two houses linked to Cardenas Vela in South Texas. He faces 10 years to life in prison if convicted of the drug conspiracy and up to $10 million in fines.
