Do it! Make Google 'do a barrel roll'

Google Chrome

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Hurry! Search Google for this exact phrase: Do a barrel roll?

(You must use Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. IE doesn't work.)

Then, once your mind is blown by this new Google gag (based on a relatively old Internet meme) that actually causes the text on your browser to "do a barrel roll," email everyone and demand that they do the same. In fact, you might just need to type in "do a" and Google will magically know what you're asking for and go into a tailspin before you hit "enter."

Most importantly however,?be quick about it lest you suffer the obligatory response from your know-it-all friends: "Dude. That is so old. I saw it, like, an hour ago. Eastern Standard Time."

KnowYourMeme

If those are, indeed the sort of insipid jerks you hang out with, (for example, you hang out with me), they will no doubt blather that?you "Do a barrel roll" was totally an old meme back when the crowd obediently did "a barrel roll" for Christopher "Moot" Poole at the very first ROFLCON in 2008.

Know Your Meme ? the internationally recognized?scholarly repository of awesome ? records 'do a barrel roll' picking up major Internet traction around 2006, along with this description of origin:

Do A Barrel Rollis an catchphrase used to instruct someone to perform a 360 degree horizontal spin. It is sometimes used to caption image macros where the subject appears to be in mid-rotation, or in animated GIFs where the subject is performing a full rotation. It is often paired with the character Peppy from the Nintendo 64 console game Star Fox 64.

From that catchphrase, as with everything else that catches on with the Internet masses, a million image macros ensued.

Of course, this is just another in a history of Easter eggs offered to us by Google Chrome. For example, if you haven't seen this before,?check out this link to Google Gravity. Similarly, searches for?"askew," "slanted" slanted or tilt (using Google Chrome, Safari?or other Webkit browsers) makes the?results lean to the right.?

Fans of Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series will enjoy a search for "answer to life, the universe and everything." (The top result is "42.") A search for "ascii art" turns the Google logo into ASCII art. Why the nerd fun goes on and on ... and on.

And if you really enjoy fun with JavaScript, head over to Google's Chrome Experiment site and waste the rest of your work day.

UPDATE: "I hate to break it to Google and you guys, but that actually isn't a barrel roll,"?Ted Rea Jr.,?this guy I know from Facebook, just pointed out. While one might counter that Google defines reality, thus making his an invalid argument, Ted did provide this illuminating graphic:

via The Paladin's Post

(Hat Tip to Will Femia, who also recorded our 2008 ROFLCON barrel roll video above.)

More on the annoying way we live now:

Supreme Court grants bail to Satyam founder Raju (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Ramalinga Raju, founder and former chairman of outsourcing firm Satyam Computer Services Ltd, in a $1.5 billion financial fraud case, after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file charges on time.

The CBI did not file a charge-sheet against Raju within the statutory period, according to a court order seen by Reuters.

According to Indian law, charge-sheet against an accused has to be filed within 90 days of arrest.

Raju, a management graduate from Ohio University who founded Satyam in 1987, shocked investors in January 2009 when he said the firm's profits had been overstated for years and assets falsified in a fraud allegedly worth more than $1.5 billion.

In November 2010, he surrendered after the Supreme Court in August cancelled a bail granted to him by a lower court in Hyderabad, where Satyam is based.

In an auction in April last year, Satyam was sold to Indian IT firm Tech Mahindra, majority-owned by automaker Mahindra & Mahindra and part-owned by British telecoms firm BT Plc.

It was subsequently renamed Mahindra Satyam.

Canon has a new 'EOS Movies' DSLR on the way too: 4K video, 35mm full frame sensor

Canon has more on the way from its newly launched EOS Movies lineup than just the C300, as shown by this new prototype DSLR. Promised to be "ideally suited for cinematographic and other digital high-resolution production applications" this camera packs a 35mm full frame image sensor capable of shooting Motion-JPEG encoded 4K video at 24fps. The press pics show it fitted with both EF 50 and new Cine 24 lenses, as Canon looks to blend the success of the 5D MK II with RED-rivaling video capabilities. The director of House shot an episode on that camera already and called it the future, which appears to be arriving sooner rather than later. Check out the press release after the break for the spec breakdown, just don't expect to hear anything about a name, price, or release date.

Palestine becomes member of UNESCO, US cuts funds (AP)

PARIS ? Palestine won its greatest international endorsement yet on Monday, full membership in UNESCO, but the move will cost the agency one-fifth of its funding and some fear will send Mideast peace efforts off a cliff.

In an unusually dramatic session at the Paris-based United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, there were cheers for "yes" votes and grumbles for the "no's" and abstentions. When the results were in, many delegates jumped to their feet and applauded and someone let out a cry of "Long live Palestine!" in French.

"Joy fills my heart. This is really a historic moment," said Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki. "It's the return of he who was banished."

But the jubilation was quickly pierced by reality: The United States said it wouldn't make a $60 million payment to fill out its contributions for this year and would suspend all future funding.

UNESCO depends heavily on that money ? Washington provides 22 percent of its budget ? but has survived without it in the past: The United States pulled out of UNESCO under President Ronald Reagan, rejoining two decades later under President George W. Bush.

Monday's vote was a grand symbolic victory for the Palestinians, but it alone won't make Palestine a state. The issues of borders for an eventual Palestinian state, security, a solution for Palestinian refugees, the fate of Jerusalem and other disputes that have thwarted Middle East peace for decades remain unresolved. Some argued it would even make it harder for the Palestinians to reach their goal.

White House spokesman Jay Carney called UNESCO's decision "premature" and said it undermines the international community's efforts toward a comprehensive Middle East peace plan. He called it a distraction from the goal of restarting direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Israeli Ambassador Nimrod Barkan said the decision did "a great disservice to international law and to chances for peace."

"UNESCO deals in science, not science fiction," he said in a speech to delegates after the vote. "However, a large number of member states, though most emphatically less than two-thirds of the member states of this organization, have adopted a science fiction version of reality."

His government said it was reconsidering its cooperation with UNESCO.

The request to grant Palestine full membership passed 107-14, with 52 abstentions. Eighty-one votes were needed for approval ? or two-thirds of the 173 eligible member delegations present. There are now 195 members in all.

In a surprise, France voted "yes" ? and the room erupted in cheers. It was joined by Ireland, Austria and the Arab states. The "no" votes included the United States, Israel, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany, while many American allies abstained, including Japan, Britain and New Zealand.

Monday's vote is definitive, and the membership formally takes effect when Palestine signs UNESCO's founding charter.

It is part of a broader Palestinian quest for greater international recognition in hopes of moving closer to statehood through channels other than simply negotiations with Israel.

There, however, are concerns that strategy could backfire. Before the vote, Israel's outspoken foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, said that if the measure passed, Israel should cut off ties with the Palestinian Authority. It was not clear whether he was voicing government policy.

By contrast, Malki said he hoped the vote would only provide momentum for the Palestinians' quest for statehood. But he added that it was no substitute for the Palestinians' more high-profile request for admission to the United Nations.

The Obama administration has vowed to use its veto power in the Security Council to quash Palestinian membership in the broader U.N., but had been hoping it wouldn't come to that since wielding its veto could undermine the United States' typically pivotal role as negotiator between Israel and the Palestinians.

However, Malki, indicated Monday that he thought he had enough support to win a Security Council vote, which has not yet been scheduled.

UNESCO, like many U.N. agencies, is a part of the world body but has separate membership procedures and can make its own decisions about which countries belong. The disconnect between memberships is rare but not unprecedented. Two tiny Pacific island nations ? the Cook Islands and Niue ? are members of UNESCO but not the U.N., while Liechtenstein belongs to the larger world body but not the cultural agency.

Even if the vote's impact isn't felt right away in the Mideast, it will be quickly felt at UNESCO, which protects historic heritage sites and works to improve world literacy, access to schooling for girls and cultural understanding. One of the first concrete results of Palestine's membership could be that the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is listed as a world heritage site; the Palestinians have already prepared an application for the traditional birthplace of Jesus.

In addition to the reduction in funding, the vote will also set back UNESCO's efforts in recent years to shed its image as an anti-Israeli agency. When the U.S. pulled out of UNESCO in the 1980s, it was to protest the passage of a resolution equating Zionism with racism.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has been at the forefront of remaking the agency's image, and she expressed concern about the vote's effect.

"It is my responsibility to say that I am concerned by the potential challenges that may arise to the universality and financial stability of the organization," Bokova said. "I am worried we may confront a situation that could erode UNESCO as a universal platform for dialogue. I am worried for the stability of its budget."

While the U.S. has cut off funding ? which typically amounts to $80 million annually ? Washington has said it will remain a member, though if it fails to pay its dues for two years, it will lose its vote.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it was up to member states "to ensure the United Nations system as a whole consistent political and financial support."

"As such, we will need to work on tactical solutions to preserve UNESCO's financial resources," he said, while urging a negotiated solution to Mideast peace.

Futurity.org ? Single test for many cancer mutations

More than one-fifth of ovarian cancers arise in women with a familial predisposition, but relying on family history would have missed one-third of the cases, says study author Elizabeth Swisher. (Credit: Hubis / Shutterstock)

U. WASHINGTON-SEATTLE (US) ? More patients with ovarian cancer carry mutations predisposed to cancer?and in more genes?than previously thought.

A rapid experimental method for screening genomes has located mutations in 12 genes for inherited cancers of the ovary, fallopian tubes, and peritoneum (the thin tissue lining the lower abdomen).

More than one-fifth of ovarian cancers arise in women with a familial predisposition, but relying on family history would have missed one-third of the cases, says Elizabeth Swisher, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington in Seattle.

The results of a recent study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of? Sciences, have implications beyond the important identification of mutations linked to ovarian and related cancers, Swisher says.

A quick, low-cost genome analysis method her team developed soon could be applicable to patient testing for a broad range of all known breast, ovarian, colon, pancreatic, and melanoma gene mutations.? A single test might be able to screen a patient for susceptibility to all these cancers.

Also, the great number of specimens that the method can simultaneously analyze could allow for large scale, population studies of cancer-causing mutations.? Such studies would tell who is at risk for certain cancers and how to effectively target prevention.

Swisher and her team concentrated on ovarian cancer gene detection in trying this sequencing method because ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly to affect a woman?s reproductive system and is difficult to diagnose in its early stages.

Ovarian cancer and cancer of the peritoneum begin quietly.? Eventually vague symptoms appear, but they mimic seemingly benign conditions, like bloating.

?Most women are not diagnosed until the cancer has advanced to the point where the chances of a cure are small,? Swisher says.? ?Women with early stage ovarian cancer have a better survival than those diagnosed with late stages, but current methods of detection are not effective.?

The lack of effective early detection is why Swisher and her research team are looking for a more complete genetic picture of ovarian and related cancers.? Learning the genetic mutations associated with these cancers could lead to tests to identify early on the women prone to these malignancies.

A quick, low cost, individual screening test for a variety of gene mutations linked to ovarian cancer would allow for effective preventive measures, the researchers say.? For example, a woman whose genetic profile indicates high risk could consider an operation to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.? This procedure has already been shown to decrease the overall death rate in women who have BRCA1 or BRAC2 mutations.

These particular mutations heighten the risk of ovarian as well as breast cancer.? As the current study shows, previously unknown mutations in other genes also occur in the population of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

New developments in cancer drugs that selectively wipe out cells containing certain genetic deficiencies is another major incentive for scientists to locate other mutations involved in ovarian cancer, Swisher notes.

For example, the new drug class called poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitors is lethal to cells missing chemicals produced by normal BRAC1 and BRAC2 genes. The PARP drugs are showing efficacy in treating ovarian cancers in patients with mutations in these genes.

Macy's to open at midnight Thanksgiving Day

(AP) ? Macy's Inc. says it will open all of its namesake stores at midnight following Thanksgiving for the first time, becoming the latest retailer to extend hours on the traditional kickoff to the holiday season.

The opening is four hours earlier than last year. The Macy's stores, which number more than 800, will stay open for 23 hours straight and close at 11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.

Target Corp. announced Friday that it was also opening its doors at midnight for the first time ever and will be offering Black Friday specials starting at that time. It also plans to stay open 23 hours. Last year, the discounter had opened its stores at 4 a.m.

"People want to shop through the night," said Martine Reardon, Macy's executive vice president of marketing. She noted the expanded hours were in response to customers' requests.

Last year, Macy's opened eight stores at midnight. The rest of the stores opened at 4 a.m. Reardon said that the midnight openings were successful.

Reardon also offered a sneak peak at some of the deals shoppers can find starting at midnight following their turkey dinner: 40 percent off select coffee makers, tea kettles and espresso makers, and a $65 Justin Bieber limited-edition fragrance gift set, which includes a 3.4 ounce eau de parfum spray and the singer's new holiday CD. Macy's is also discounting Rampage boots to $19.99, down from $49 to $59.

The Cincinnati company also operates 41 Bloomingdale's stores, which will open at 8 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving. The stores typically open at 10 a.m. throughout the year.

Retailers have expanded their Black Friday hours each year, and they're also trying to outdo each other by publicizing some of the deals weeks in advance. They also are responding to shoppers who map out bargain-hunting strategies weeks in advance. Black Friday circulars are already starting to be leaked to deal sites like Blackfriday.com and Blackfriday2011.com. Only a few years ago, stores kept their discounts and hours secret until a few days before the Thanksgiving weekend.

The season kickoff stretched into Thanksgiving Day last year, when most Sears and Kmart stores opened Thanksgiving morning for the first time. Toys R Us stores opened at 10 p.m. Many Gap Inc. stores were open. And Wal-Mart, many of whose stores already operate around the clock, opened most other stores by midnight Thanksgiving evening. More merchants are expected to announce Thanksgiving weekend plans in the next week or so.

(AP Photo/St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chris Gooden) EDWARDSVILLE INTELLIGENCER OUT. THE ALTON TELEGRAPH OUT

(AP) ? Tony La Russa waited until after the championship parade and then called a team meeting with his players.

"We didn't know what to expect," said pitcher Chris Carpenter, who won Game 7 of the World Series against Texas on Friday night. "I think we all figured it was just going to be like, 'Thataway guys. Great year. Way to battle!' Instead, he dropped that on us. I think everybody was caught off-guard."

And with that, the 67-year-old La Russa said goodbye to baseball and became the first manager to retire immediately after leading his team to a Series title ? the third of his career.

"I think this just feels like it's time to end it," he said Monday. "When I look in the mirror, I know I'd come back for the wrong reasons, and I didn't want to do that."

La Russa said he told general manager John Mozeliak of his decision in August ? before the Cards rallied from a 10?-game deficit in the NL wild-card race to upset Philadelphia and Milwaukee in the playoffs.

They won the thrilling seven-game Series after twice coming within a strike of elimination in Game 6.

"I tip my hat to him. He's had a great career. What a way to go out," Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.

The player meeting was short and emotional.

"Some grown men cried," La Russa said, joking that, "I kind of liked that because they made me cry a few times.

La Russa won the World Series with Oakland in 1989, and St. Louis in 2006 and this year, joining Sparky Anderson as the only manager to win with clubs in both leagues.

During 33 seasons with the Chicago White Sox (1979-86), Oakland (1986-95) and St. Louis (1996-11), La Russa compiled a 2,728-2,365 regular-season record. He trails only Connie Mack (3,731) and John McGraw (2,763) for wins. And his 70 postseason victories are behind only Joe Torre's 84.

A rare manager with a law degree, La Russa was voted AL Manager of the Year three times, and NL Manager of the Year in 2002. He will be up for consideration for the Hall of Fame in December 2013, at the same time as Torre and Bobby Cox.

"I think you can make a case for him as best of all-time. Absolutely," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland, who coached for La Russa with the White Sox after managing against him in the minors.

Leyland said La Russa was the "total package" as a manager, obsessing over the lineup card, outfoxing opponents during games and refusing to bend to public opinion.

"Terry Francona used to say 'If you manage for the guys in the seats, pretty soon you'll be sitting with 'em.' Tony never worried about that stuff," Leyland said. "It's a good lesson for managers."

La Russa revolutionized the sport during his time with Oakland, making Dennis Eckersley a one-inning closer. Now, it's common for all 30 big league teams.

"He's been an outstanding leader of many different teams under many different circumstances, and that's hard to do," said New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson, La Russa's GM with the Athletics.

La Russa had unusual strategies: He started a game with the pitcher batting eighth 432 times. He was renowned for his use of batter-pitcher matchups in determining which reliever to bring in, but also ridiculed "Moneyball" and its emphasis on statistics over human scouting and observation.

Potential successors include Francona, Jim Riggleman and Joe Maddon, who has one year left on his deal in Tampa Bay but has expressed interest in the Cardinals in the past.

A pal of Bobby Knight, Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick, La Russa was an outspoken supporter of PETA and animal rights, and could be seen during spring training years ago in Phoenix hitting fly balls to one of his dogs.

He was treated at the Mayo Clinic in May for shingles, which left his face swollen and right eye nearly shut. The manager downplayed his health, saying "it had no bearing on my future."

La Russa spoke with little emotion at the news conference with one exception, when he paused to compose himself as he thanked his wife, Elaine, and two daughters for putting up with his absence over much of his long tenure.

The news conference was held at 9 a.m. CDT, giving La Russa time to get to New York for an appearance on Monday's "Late Show with David Letterman" during which he joked a bit with the host.

Letterman asked La Russa how he was able to manage for so long and La Russa replied, "Uh, I don't know. How long have you done this?"

Letterman's reply: "This is my first night."

La Russa willingly shared credit for his longevity, telling Letterman that Dave Duncan "will go down as the greatest pitching coach in the history of the game."

And though he never relocated to St. Louis, La Russa had warm thoughts for the city.

"You don't like to disparage anybody else, David, but it's a unique place 'cause most places, they're with you win or tie, but with them, it's win or lose."

La Russa often appeared tightlipped at his televised postgame news conferences, but behind the scenes he showed his sense of humor and often poked fun at himself by referencing his .199 career big league average in a playing career that consisted of 176 at-bats over 11 years as a second baseman, shortstop and third baseman. The manager was looser than usual and more reflective in October, perhaps doing a personal farewell tour.

La Russa donned a throwback Sam Bradford jersey on the sideline before the Rams' upset of the Saints on Sunday.

"I saw him smile more in the last few months during games than I ever saw in the eight years that I was here before it," Carpenter said. "He was enjoying the moment, but I didn't know it."

La Russa gave a signal of his intentions to Duncan, his former teammate and his pitching coach since they were together on the White Sox. Duncan left the team for several weeks to tend to his ailing wife, and La Russa asked whether Duncan could return in time for the regular-season finale.

Chris Duncan, a son of the pitching coach, who played for La Russa in St. Louis, said he was fairly certain this meant the end.

"Tony wanted his longtime sidekick, the coach who's been with him all the way, with him if it was going to be his last game," Chris Duncan told The Associated Press. "That was important to him."

La Russa said it was definite that he'd never manage again and added he has no desire to be a general manager, a job he described as the hardest in baseball. He would be open to a position in baseball in the future, but probably not with the Cardinals.

"Me personally, I think it's time to step away for a long while," La Russa said

Hired by Bill Veeck for his first major league managing job with the White Sox, La Russa was fired by White Sox GM Ken Harrelson.

"I allowed the general manager to fire him. That was the worst mistake I ever made," Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf said. "It turned about to be great for Tony, though, because he left here at a time we weren't doing well and he went to Oakland right at the time that all of their talent came to fruition."

La Russa managed teams to 12 first-place finishes and six pennants, going to the World Series in three straight years with the A's from 1988-90. He also lost in the Series with the Cardinals in 2004.

"Tony wanted to win in spring training," Leyland said. "He wanted everything done right from the start. It's like he was born to manage."

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said he didn't try to talk La Russa out of his decision. The manager had taken his time in recent years deciding whether to return to baseball.

"I said, 'Are you sure you want to do this?'" DeWitt said. "I respected his decision. It was never about 'Do you want me to come back?'"

"We're not going to find a Tony La Russa out there, given his career and what he's accomplished, what he's meant to the Cardinals," DeWitt said.

Mozeliak said the new manager will be given autonomy to hire staff. Duncan is under contract for 2012, but will likely also retire.

Mozeliak didn't think La Russa's departure would affect negotiations with Albert Pujols, a free agent for the first time after 11 seasons with the Cardinals.

"He probably understood that Tony is not going to manage forever," Mozeliak said.

Before heading home to California, La Russa said he was happy he didn't know what the future held for him. He even joked about his next occupation.

"Maybe open a book store," he said.

Piggyback Bandit arrested at Mont. soccer tourney

(AP) ? Authorities say a man dubbed the "Piggyback Bandit" because of a history of jumping on the backs of high school athletes in Oregon and Washington state has been arrested in Montana.

Helena Police Chief Troy McGee says police received a tip that 28-year-old Sherwin Shayegan was at a high school boys soccer tournament in Helena on Friday and observed him jump on a player's back.

The Independent Record reports (http://bit.ly/vfS68I) police took Shayegan into custody on suspicion of misdemeanor assault. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney.

Last spring the Oregon School Activities Association warned athletes to look out for Shayegan after officials say he turned up at events in Eugene and Pendleton and got piggyback rides from some athletes.

Police in Bonney Lake, Wash., say Shayegan gave a high school athlete money and jumped on his back.
