Commuters pass by a banana plantation that was destroyed at the height of Tuesday's typhoon named "Bopha" at Nabunturan township, Compostela Valley in southern Philippines Friday Dec. 7, 2012. The economic losses began to emerge Friday after export banana growers reported that 14,000 hectares (34,600 acres) of export banana plantations, equal to 18 percent of the total in Mindanao, were destroyed. The Philippines is the world's third-largest banana producer and exporter, supplying well-known brands such as Dole, Chiquita and Del Monte mainly to Japan and also to South Korea, China, New Zealand and the Middle East. (AP) ? Search and rescue operations following a typhoon that killed nearly 600 people in the southern Philippines have been hampered in part because many residents of this ravaged farming community are too stunned to assist recovery efforts, an official said Saturday.

With nearly 600 other people missing after Typhoon Bopha struck on Tuesday, soldiers, police and volunteers from outside New Bataan have formed the bulk of the teams searching for bodies or signs of life under tons of fallen trees and boulders that were swept down from steep hills surrounding the town, said municipal spokesman Marlon Esperanza.

"We are having a hard time finding guides," he told The Associated Press. "Entire families were killed and the survivors are still in shock. They appear dazed. They can't move."

He said the rocks, mud, tree trunks and other rubble that litter the town have destroyed landmarks, making it doubly difficult to search places where houses once stood.

On Friday, bodies found jammed under fallen trees that could not be retrieved were marked with makeshift flags made of torn cloth so they can be easily spotted by properly equipped retrieval teams.

Government authorities have decided to bury unidentified bodies in a common grave after police forensic officers process them for future identification by relatives, Esperanza said.

He said heavy equipment, search dogs and chain saws had been brought in by volunteers from as far away as the capital, Manila, about 950 kilometers (590 miles) to the north.

Nearly 400,000 people, mostly from Compostela Valley and nearby Davao Oriental provinces, have lost their homes since Typhoon Bopha struck and are crowded inside evacuation centers or staying with relatives, relying on food and emergency supplies being rushed in by government agencies and aid groups.

The typhoon plowed through the main southern island of Mindanao, crossed the central Philippines and headed to Vietnam, but it has lingered over the South China Sea for the past two days.

On Saturday, the weather bureau raised storm warnings over the western part of the main northern island of Luzon after the storm veered northeast. It said weather systems to the east and west had sandwiched Bopha, slowing it down and forcing it to make a U-turn and head toward the western part of the northern Philippines. Forecasters warned that the waters off Luzon would be "rough to very rough."

"I want to know how this tragedy happened and how to prevent a repeat," President Benigno Aquino III said during a visit Friday to New Bataan, ground zero of the disaster, with ferocious winds and rains lashing the area.

Officials say 276 people were killed in Compostela Valley, including 155 in New Bataan, and 277 in Davao Oriental. About 40 people died elsewhere and nearly 600 are still missing, 411 from New Bataan alone.

Davao Oriental Gov. Corazon Malanyaon told the AP that clean water and shelter were the biggest problem in three of the worst-hit towns in his province facing the Pacific Ocean, where the typhoon blew in from.

Stephen Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association, said losses had been conservatively estimated at 12 billion pesos ($300 million), including 8 billion pesos ($200 million) in damaged fruits that had been ready for harvest, and the rest for the cost of rehabilitating farms, which will take about a year.

Justin Dentmon Looks To Regain His NBA D-League MVP Form From A Season Ago

Coming off his best shooting performance of the season Friday night against the Idaho Stampede, Justin Dentmon is looking like the player that won the NBA D-League's MVP award from a season ago. Dentmon's ultimate goal is to get back to the NBA, and he will need to replicate, if not increase upon his excellent numbers from last year in order to do so.

Justin Dentmon capped off his MVP season last year by dropping 30 points in the NBA D-League finals to help the Austin Toros win their first ever D-League championship. It was the proverbial icing on the cake for Dentmon, who finished the year with averages of 22.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists.

Just three days after achieving one of the best all-time seasons in the NBA D-League, the basketball obsessed Dentmon, boarded a plane for Milan, Italy where he helped Olympia Milano for their playoff run. Dentmon is clearly dedicated to his craft, and his commitment to getting better as a player may just land him in the running for another D-League MVP, or better yet, a Call-Up to the NBA.

Historically speaking, Dentmon has his work cut out for him, as the last four D-League MVP's had decreased averages in their following season after winning the award (note: 2009-2010 MVP Mike Harris, did not return to the D-League after his MVP season). Thus far, Dentmon is doing his best to reverse this trend, he is averaging 20.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists heading into tonight's game, and is on his way back to his MVP-style of play.

Dentmon had his best game of the season Friday night, scoring 28 points, and making 6-of-11 three pointers. It was Dentmon's best shooting performance of the year, and something the former University of Washington Husky needs to continue if he wants another shot in the NBA. Despite Dentmon's point guard size, his game since playing alongside Sacramento Kings guard Isiah Thomas for the Huskies, has screamed shooting guard. Dentmon has a knack for scoring the ball, and it is his instant offense which could ultimately land him back in the NBA.

Dentmon received a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors after a short stint with the Spurs last season, just enough of a taste to likely fuel him to return to the NBA via another standout season in the D-League this year. Dentmon is currently 19th in scoring, and will need to move up those rankings to around where he finished last year, which was 4th overall to help his chances.

Dentmon will need to continue to shine as a scorer, as well as a three-point shooter in order to become a candidate for a Call-Up this season, and the feisty guard looks to be right on track.

CEOh no he didn't! Rahul Sood heckles HP over strangely named Envy H8 PC

It's no secret that Rahul Sood, who now runs Microsoft's Bing Fund, feels a twinge of bitterness towards his previous employer. Having worked for HP until 2010, and having endowed it with the Envy sub-brand, he's since been forced to watch from the sidelines while the mothership floundered. But it's not the u-turns or bad investments that have jerked Sood's chain this time -- it's actually the slightly awkward (and potentially emotional) branding of a model in HP's desktop range. After seeing details of the product pop up online, he tweeted:

"Thought I'd seen everything... then I saw the 'HP ENVY H8' desktop... what the heck guys? Is this code for I give up?"

Tom's Hardware reached out to Sood for an explanation and got a carefully-worded response in which he implied that HP has become preoccupied with the "logo on the box" at the expense of "culture" and "community." Meanwhile, the old Pavilion h8 has somehow slipped by unnoticed.

Police order toxicology tests on dead Russian whistleblower

LONDON (Reuters) - British police have carried out toxicology tests on the body of a Russian anti-corruption whistleblower whose mysterious death in England has put a new spotlight on Russian criminal groups entrenched in Europe.

Alexander Perepilichny, 44, moved to Britain three years ago and had been helping Swiss prosecutors uncover a shady Russian criminal group suspected of being involved in large-scale, cross-border tax fraud violations.

Police have struggled to establish the cause of his death since he suddenly collapsed and died near his home on an upmarket, heavily protected estate in Surrey, south of London, on November 10.

Following an inconclusive post-mortem on November 14, investigators conducted another examination of Perepilichny's body as well as toxicology tests.

"Toxicology tests are being carried out as part of the investigation," a Surrey police spokeswoman said on Friday, adding that it could take months to get the results.

"The death is being treated as unexplained and remains under investigation."

Although toxicology tests are often standard practice following inconclusive post-mortem examinations, the move has evoked memories of the 2006 death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko who died in London after drinking tea poisoned with radioactive polonium-210.

Perepilichny's case has shed new light on a multimillion-dollar tax fraud scheme that was originally uncovered by Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was jailed in 2008 by the Russian authorities on charges his colleagues say were fabricated.

In 2009, Magnitsky died in a Russian prison, provoking an international outcry and becoming a symbol of human rights abuse and corruption in Russia.

Perepilichny is the fourth person linked to the case to have died in unusual circumstances.

In 2010, he came forward with information linking Russian government officials to a tax fraud scheme involving a Swiss bank, a move that helped Swiss prosecutors open a far-reaching criminal investigation in 2011.

Britain is the chosen home for many Russians, some seeking employment opportunities or refuge from political persecution. But there are also fears that London is turning into a playground for Russian mobsters trying to avenge their former partners hiding abroad.

Russian officials have played down Perepilichny's link to the Magnitsky affair, which has strained Moscow's relations with the West and prompted the United States to push for a bill cracking down on Russian corruption.

"We cannot see any connection between the death of Mr. Alexander Perepilichny, the causes of which are yet to be established, and the so called 'Magnitsky case,'" the Russian embassy in London said in a statement.

Britain's Independent newspaper, financially backed by a Russian billionaire critical of the Kremlin, reported on Friday that Perepilichny received a warning a year ago that his name was on a hit list in Russia.

"It was like an order book," a source described as an acquaintance of Perepilichny told the paper.

"His name was in it."

NPD: PC sales got no boost from Windows 8

(AP) ? Sales of personal computers in the U.S. didn't get any boost from the launch of Windows 8, confounding the hopes of Microsoft and PC makers, research firm NPD Group said Thursday.

In the three weeks after Windows 8 launched on Oct. 26, sales of Windows PCs and tablet computers fell 21 percent compared with a year earlier, according to NPD, which tracks U.S. retail sales.

There's no sign that Windows 8 made things worse for PC makers. Rather, NPD said the weak sales are a continuation of a trend seen throughout this year.

U.S. consumers appear more interested in spending electronics dollars on smartphones and tablets than on upgrading their computers. Several tablet makers have released new models this fall, and Apple has made a smaller version of its market-leading iPad.

Microsoft Corp. developed Windows 8 with tablets and touch screens in mind. The new operating system features a new look and is designed to make desktops and laptops work more like tablets.

The Redmond, Wash., company is supporting the launch with its largest-ever advertising campaign. UBS analyst Mary Jo Foley put the value of the campaign at $1 billion.

PC makers were officially optimistic and have largely switched their consumer-focused product lines over to Windows 8, but they were cautious about stocking large numbers of PCs ahead of the launch. Reviews of the new operating system were mixed.

"After just four weeks on the market, it's still early to place blame on Windows 8 for the ongoing weakness in the PC market," NPD analyst Stephen Baker in a statement. "We still have the whole holiday selling season ahead of us, but clearly Windows 8 did not prove to be the impetus for a sales turnaround some had hoped for."

Baker said Windows 8 laptops with touch screens were doing well, helping drive up the average selling price of PCs.

Microsoft has said it sold 40 million licenses to Windows 8 in its first month on the market, but that number includes licenses bought by PC manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. for machines built but not yet sold.

Research firm IHS iSuppli has predicted that 349 million PCs will be shipped worldwide this year. That would be a 1 percent decline from the year before ? the first year-over-year decline since 2001. In the U.S., PC sales have been declining for two years already.

IOC ready to take away Armstrong's Olympic bronze

(AP) ? His seven Tour de France titles erased from cycling's record books, Lance Armstrong still holds claim to one piece of sports hardware ? an Olympic medal.

But for how much longer?

The fate of Armstrong's medal will be addressed when the International Olympic Committee executive board meets next week in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Twelve years after Armstrong won bronze in the road time trial at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the IOC wants the medal back after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's report of widespread doping by Armstrong and some teammates during his seven Tour de France victories from 1999-2005.

The International Cycling Federation, UCI, recently agreed to strip Armstrong of his seven Tour titles and ban him for life.

The board could decide to strip the medal next week or wait another few weeks until cycling's governing body has officially notified Armstrong of the loss of his Tour titles.

IOC lawyers are studying whether the eight-year statute of limitations applies in this case, an issue that could push back a decision. But the IOC's resolve to revoke the medal and wipe Armstrong from the Olympic records is clear; the only issue is the timing and procedure.

"The board will consider this case," IOC vice president Thomas Bach, a German lawyer who heads the body's doping investigations, told The Associated Press on Friday. "The board is following a zero-tolerance policy on doping."

Craig Reedie, an IOC vice president from Britain, added: "We need to get this one behind us."

The IOC opened a disciplinary case last month after the USADA report detailed widespread doping by Armstrong and his teammates. The report called it the most sophisticated doping program in sports.

WADA and the UCI have annulled all of Armstrong's results since Aug. 1, 1998.

The IOC has an eight-year statute for changing Olympic results, but officials believe the decision by USADA and the cycling body to go back 14 years to disqualify Armstrong should clear the way for them to reach back to 2000.

"I would hope we can deal with it because the evidence (against Armstrong) is overwhelming," Australian IOC executive board member John Coates told The Australian newspaper. "USADA and the UCI went outside the eight-year limit on the basis that the statute simply doesn't apply if you have broken the law, so I imagine our lawyer will see if that applies with us."

Two months after winning his second Tour de France title in 2000, Armstrong took bronze in Sydney behind winner and U.S. Postal Service teammate Vyacheslav Ekimov of Russia and Jan Ullrich of Germany.

The IOC has no plans to reallocate Armstrong's bronze medal to any other rider, just as the UCI decided not to pick winners for the Tour de France titles once held by the American. That means Spanish rider Abraham Olano Manzano, who finished fourth in Sydney, would not be upgraded and the third-place spot would be left vacant in the Olympic records.

In August, the IOC stripped Tyler Hamilton, a former Armstrong teammate, of his time-trial gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics after he admitted to doping. In that case, Ekimov was upgraded to the gold.

In a bid to head off any legal disputes, the IOC had considered writing to Armstrong requesting that he give up the Sydney medal on his own. But the committee discarded that idea and is pursuing its own disciplinary action.

The chances of Armstrong voluntarily returning the medal seem remote: He posted a photograph on Twitter last month showing him lying on a couch at his home in Texas with seven framed yellow Tour de France jerseys mounted on the wall.

The UCI, which initially questioned how USADA could skirt the eight-year rule, has not yet formally notified Armstrong of its ruling but is expected to do so in the coming days. After that, Armstrong would have 21 days to appeal. The IOC could wait until that period expires, then revoke his third-place finish on the grounds that Armstrong had accepted his disqualification and should send back the medal.

The IOC is also investigating Levi Leipheimer, a former Armstrong teammate who won the time-trial bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games. The American confessed to doping as part of his testimony against Armstrong in the USADA case.

The IOC is looking into the details of his admitted doping, including when the cheating took place, before moving to strip his medal. Finishing fourth behind Leipheimer in 2008 was Alberto Contador, the Spaniard who was stripped of the 2010 Tour de France title after testing positive for clenbuterol.

Nationals get Span from Twins for minor leaguer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Washington Nationals have acquired outfielder Denard Span from the Minnesota Twins for minor league pitcher Alex Meyer, giving the reigning NL East champions a leadoff hitter and center fielder.

Span is a career .284 hitter with 23 home runs, 230 RBIs, 90 steals and a .357 on-base percentage during five seasons with the Twins.

The acquisition of Span allows the Nationals potentially to move 20-year-old Bryce Harper to left field, with Jayson Werth staying in right. Michael Morse could then move to first base ? the position played by free agent slugger Adam LaRoche.

Meyer went 10-6 with a 2.86 ERA at Class A this year.
