Does A Higher Minimum Wage Kill Jobs?

Job seekers lined up at McDonald's restaurants nationwide last week, hoping to fill one of the fast-food chain's 50,000 openings during a one-day nationwide hiring event.

As the days grow warmer, employers who run roller coasters, water parks and hot dog stands are preparing for the summer season. They're seeking workers to fill jobs at or just above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.

Labor advocates say it's time for those workers to get a raise. They noted that when the minimum wage was last increased in July 2009, the cost of gasoline was about $2.50 a gallon. This summer, the pump price may well be twice that in many locations. Workers will also be spending more for their lunches because of higher food prices.

But the political outlook for a cost-of-living raise is bleak this year. With Republicans in control of the U.S. House, labor advocates are not expecting Congress to act.

States Wary Of Raising Minimum Wages

Instead, they have been focusing their lobbying efforts on state legislatures. Seventeen states and the District of Columbia have minimum wages set higher than the federal level. For example, in Oregon the wage is now $8.50 an hour.

Minimum wage supporters are hoping to prompt at least a few states to act. In Illinois, for example, some lawmakers have been pushing to raise the state minimum wage up to $10.65 in steps over four years. So far, they have not been successful. In fact, no state has voted to increase the minimum wage this year.

The problem is that with the unemployment rate still at 8.8 percent, elected officials don't want to do anything that might discourage job creation, especially for low-wage workers.

Business groups say a wage increase at this time would be a blow to workers because it would only discourage job creation. Government-mandated wage hikes "cause restaurant operators to make very difficult decisions to eliminate jobs, cut staff hours or increase prices," according to the National Restaurant Association, a trade group.

The Rise (Or Fall) Of The Minimum Wage

The federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, to $7.25 an hour. In 1971, the minimum wage was $1.60. Adjusted for inflation, a worker today would have to make $8.83 an hour to have the same buying power, according to the Labor Department.

You Have To Have Money To Spend It

Labor advocates insist that thinking is wrong-headed. They argue that unless more workers get pay raises this year, a lot of families won't have money to spend. And, they say, that's exactly what the U.S. economy needs ? more consumer confidence and more spending. To stimulate the economy, lawmakers should insist that employers put more money into workers' wallets, the argument goes.

Political polls consistently show broad support for that viewpoint. "The average person knows the cost of things is going up," says Jen Kern, minimum wage campaign coordinator for the National Employment Law Project. "This is a critical part of recovery ? to help people have more money to spend."

Economists have been debating which of those competing views is correct ever since the federal minimum wage was first enacted in 1938. Some studies show raising the wage reduces the number of jobs, while others show that a modestly higher wage can stimulate spending without costing jobs.

In any case, while the debate continues in the United States, officials in other countries, especially in Asia, have come to a conclusion: Low-wage jobs need to pay more to head off social unrest. Workers are becoming angrier about this year's rising food and fuel prices. In China, Indonesia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, the governments are in the process of introducing or toughening their minimum wage laws. In Hong Kong, for example, the government is imposing a minimum wage for the first time on May 1 ? just in time for International Workers' Day.

Vettel cruises to victory as the rest fight between themselves | 2011 Turkish Grand Prix review

8 May 2011 by Keith Collantine

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Istanbul, 2011

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Istanbul, 2011

Sebastian Vettel[1] dominated the Turkish Grand Prix.

The Red Bull[2] driver led almost every lap while team mate Mark Webber recovered second place to make it a one-two for the team.

Webber fell by Nico Rosberg[3] at the start of the race but the Mercedes driver was powerless to keep drivers behind him early on.

But Webber came under pressure from Alonso who was quicker in the third stint and passed the Red Bull driver. Webber was able to reverse the move later in the race.

Lewis Hamilton[4] had an eventful run to fourth. He tried to repeat his 2010 move of overtaking around a Red Bull the outside of turn four on the first lap ? this time it was Webber.

It didn?t work, and he fell behind Alonso and Jenson Button[5]. That began a fierce battle between the two McLaren drivers.

Hamilton twice got past Button using DRS but Button was able to re-pass his team mate on the start/finish line. Then Hamilton?s tyres started to go off and Felipe Massa[6] overtook him.

McLaren[7] quickly fixed the problem for him, however. Hamilton and Massa came into the pits together and McLaren got Hamilton out before the Ferrari.

But his third visit to the pits did not go so smoothly. The mechanic on the right-front wheel couldn?t get the tyre changed and he lost over ten seconds.

While Hamilton committed to a four-stop strategy, team mate Button tried to get through on three.

Button found himself stuck behind Massa for several laps in the middle of the race. He finally made it past at turn 12, while Massa locked his tyres and had to head for the pits.

Button came out of the pits for the final time on lap 39, aiming to complete the final 19 laps without a stop. He did, but he couldn?t keep Hamilton and Rosberg from dropping him to sixth, and Nick Heidfeld[8] was bearing down on him when the chequered flag came out.

Only two other driver in the top ten finished the race with three stops instead of four. One was Sebastien Buemi[9], who finished ninth behind the delayed Vitaly Petrov.

The other was Kamui Kobayashi[10], who recovered from starting last to clinch the final point.

Petrov and Heidfeld had a wheel-banging matched in turn 13 earlier in the race. Petrov also came to blows with Michael Schumacher[11], who clipped the Renault as the Russian driver passed him on lap two.

It was the prelude to a desperate race for Schumacher, who ended the race 12th behind Massa. The Ferrari driver passed the Mercedes[12] twice, having been delayed by a slow final pit stop.

Sergio Perez[13] lost his front wing in the mayhem of the first lap but made his way back up to finish 13th.

The racing further down the order was just as frantic as it was at the front, with multiple changes of positions at turn 12 aided by the Drag Reduction System.

Vettel even had to back off as he arrived to lap Perez and Adrian Sutil[14] who were swapping places at turn 12.

Rubens Barrichello[15] ran in the top ten early on but fell to 15th at the end in front of Jaime Alguersuari[16] and Pastor Maldonado.

Jarno Trulli[17] finished the race 11 seconds behind the other Williams, with Heikki Kovalainen, Jerome d?Ambrosio, Narain Karthikeyan and Vitantonio Liuzzi behind.

Paul di Resta[18] was the only driver to drop out during the race with an unspecified car problem, while Timo Glock didn?t make the start with a gearbox problem.

Vettel strengthens his position in the drivers? championship and Red Bull celebrate a one-two finish two months after their nightmare race at the same venue.

The resurgent Alonso showed the team can still be caught. But they?ll need to do it soon before Vettel runs away with the championship.

Once You Pop You Can't Stop...Diffusing? [Photography]

Camera diffusers have been made from all sorts of cheap supplies before, but never have I seen one made from a Pringles can, a couple of rubber bands, paper towels and some duct tape. Voila, Steve Kushnir's photos shot with his Nikon D5000 are lit more evenly, and for heaps less than pro-diffusers normally cost. More »

The Escort: Theater Review

The Bottom Line

World premiere story of a high-end call girl and her middle-aged female gynecologist achieves some dramatic churn in the second act but mostly wallows in didactic lectures and conscientious checklisting.

Venue:

Geffen Playhouse (runs through May 8)

Cast:

Maggie Siff, Polly Draper, James Eckhouse, Gabriel Sunday

Director:

Lisa Peterson

Playwright:

Jane Anderson

The Escort opens with lead actress Maggie Siff addressing the audience out of character, explaining that, because extensive nudity would be distracting, breasts and genitalia will therefore be simulated by Laura Bauer's discreet molds and body stockings. The calculation is accurate, although the 99-Cent Store-level distancing devices that persist throughout the play manage to be equivalently disconcerting and clunkily scolding. Playwright Jane Anderson has not yet managed to lubricate her exposition sufficiently to shed her own self-consciousness, no matter how fervently she urges the audience to do so.

Working girl Charlotte (Siff) is thrilled to find a nonjudgmental ear in her new doctor Rhona (Polly Draper), and Rhona is easily seduced by her curiosity about her new patient's candor and self-possession. Charlotte appears to be a paragon of professionalism and positive attitudes about the altruistic virtues of sex work, while Rhona, the divorced single mother of a 13-year-old son, Lewis (Gabriel Sunday), epitomizes in her more conventional way a liberal tolerance marinating in a comprehensible vulnerability. Naturally, both prove to be deficient in awareness of the effects of their behaviors on themselves and others, as each is a destructive control freak of a distinctively different sort.

The first act especially stumbles in its near-paranoid concern about audience acceptance of its subject matter, reassuring with passages of informative education that audiences hardly need after decades of cable (the recent documentary on Eliot Spitzer actually conveyed more flavor of the escort world in what was essentially a subplot). Consequently, while much scaffolding is overcarpentered, little dramatic development is experienced before intermission.

As the plot finally thickens, Anderson and her players bring off a number of effective big scenes with well-filigreed dialogue and some satisfying moral complexity, although this is eventually undercut by an easy and unconvincing denouement. Anderson understands the central family figures substantially better than the sex workers, and the adolescent arguments of Lewis with his parents are particularly acute and tart. The urologist ex-husband (James Eckhouse) cuts something of a stock figure to which the actor brings a convincing frailty. Sunday is particularly forceful in an especially onerous double role. Siff takes complete command of the stage in character, and Draper is skilled, though both are crucially undermined by the still-gestating quality of the writing.

Anderson's last play to premiere at the Geffen, The Quality of Life, was perhaps her finest achievement to date, but The Escort needs substantial reconsideration before proceeding beyond this run.

BlackBerry Messenger on PlayBook hands-on

We just spend some time with Ryan Bidan, senior product manager for the PlayBook, who gave us a hands-on demo of BlackBerry Messenger on RIM's little tablet. It's not a native app -- it requires the PlayBook to be paired with a BlackBerry smartphone via BlackBerry Bridge. The functionality is being pushed out "tonight" with a Bridge update on the handset side, and an OS update on the tablet side. So if you and your PlayBook have been longing to get your BBM on, today's your lucky day -- assuming of course that you have a BlackBerry phone on another network than AT&T. Expect a standalone app sometime in the future, but in the meantime hit our video above for the full demo.

Powerful Twitter Marketing Strategies For Branding Your Online ...

You can usually trace results back to certain actions no matter what you are doing. However, Twitter can could be seen as the least understood social site, but that does not mean you are not able to understand it or use it to your advantage. If you realize what is occurring and how to be effective, then you can be in a fantastic position for terrific exposure for your business. But you will need to also know that the Twitter environment can be potentially detrimental depending on how you approach it. We mention that simply because you can make errors that will hurt your business, also.

The great hint to effective Twitter marketing is establishing real relationships with people in your market. You will find all kinds of people, and many will be in your target audience while others may be in outside your market. Just keep in mind that you need to have relationships with people who are from your unique market. Twitter marketing is amazingly easy, and all you?ll need to do is be yourself with people. Discuss mostly about things not related to business, and which means almost anything that is proper. Remember, though, that you do need to be aware of yourself and draw the line. Never be too personal because ultimately you are representing yourself and your business.

If you would like to be accepted, and not disregarded, then you have to really keep the self-promotion and advertising to a minimum. One of the worst things you can do is advertise too much, and you will need to get a sense for what is too much. Promoting your self or your business is almost anticipated, but retain a very low percentage of the times you do it. If you wish to have an idea regarding it, then perhaps two times out of ten is a good guideline to adhere to. But over and above that, you really need to keep your business outside of the conversations. Developing and nurturing beneficial market associations is what Twitter is all about.

You can frequently see good responses when you share current goings-on with your own business. You can think about this as spreading information about either anything about your life or maybe your business. The thing about this is it is news, and ideally you know how people like news stories of all kinds. People will not mind if the news is legitimate, not too frequently and you share a business related link. However any time you do this, it will matter if you make an effort to clarify why you are sharing the link. Remember to network, share and apply discipline with direct marketing and advertising of your business.

If you are thinking about generating massive income online you might want to think about investing in a product similar to Blogging Underground review. At the very least make sure you look at a good Blogging Underground to uncover what people are saying with regard to it, and whether you might be able to receive a Blogging Underground bonus.
