AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said Wednesday he will defend high school cheerleaders who want to use Bible verses on banners at football games.

Abbott has filed court papers to intervene in a lawsuit that cheerleaders at Kountze High School filed against the school district complaining that a new policy violated their freedom of speech. In September, district officials told the cheerleaders to stop using Bible verses at football games after the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained.

The atheist group argued that using banners with phrases such as, "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me," violates the First Amendment prohibition on the government establishing a religion.

After the school told the cheerleaders they could no longer use Bible verses, they filed suit in Hardin County district court. State District Judge Steve Thomas put a hold on the new school policy while he considered the arguments, and the cheerleaders continued to make the banners. He is expected to rule Thursday.

Abbott said that since the cheerleaders create the banners without school funding, they qualify as free speech and should not be banned.

"This is student-led expression, and that's perfectly constitutional," Abbott said. "We will not allow atheist groups from outside the state of Texas to come into the state to use menacing and misleading and intimidating tactics to try to bully schools to bow down to the altar of secular beliefs."

The foundation responded by accusing Abbott of abusing his elected position to promote religious views.

"Abbott has crossed the line from carrying out his secular constitutional duties to defend the state of Texas, to using his government bully pulpit to bully and scapegoat atheists," its statement said. "Those cheerleaders are free to worship as they like, go to the church of their choice, but not to exploit a public school event, and their school-sponsored podium, to push their personal religious views on an entire stadium."

The case began when the foundation wrote to the school district, threatening a lawsuit. The group is dedicated to the separation of church and state and believes that religion hinders social progress.

Joining Abbott at a press conference Wednesday, Gov. Rick Perry said he supported the cheerleaders and denounced the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

"Anyone who is expressing their faith should be celebrated, from my perspective, in this day and age of instant gratification, this me-first culture that we see all too often," Perry said. "We're a nation built on the concept of free expression of ideas. We're also a culture built on the concept that the original law is God's law, outlined in the Ten Commandments."

Kelly Shackelford, the president of Liberty Institute which is representing the cheerleaders, welcomed Abbott's intervention in the case.

"Greg Abbott again has proven that he is a friend of students and is willing to fight for their religious freedom," he said.

Ravens LB Lewis 'designated to return'; Suggs back

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) ? Ray Lewis has been placed on injured reserve with the "designated to return" tag, which provides him the chance to play again this season.

Lewis tore his right triceps in Sunday's game against Dallas. He was scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday.

His return his season is unlikely, but by being designated to return, the 37-year-old is eligible to come back in six weeks.

Coach John Harbaugh says, "We have no idea whether that time frame has anything to do with the injury, but there's an opportunity and we're going to keep the door open."

The loss of Lewis was balanced somewhat by the return of linebacker Terrell Suggs, who practiced Wednesday for the first time this season. Suggs has been out with a torn right Achillies tendon.

Three Things Every Parent and Politican Needs to Know about Merit ...

On the drive home today, I tuned in to the local talk radio station because the host was interviewing a TON of local and state political candidates and I wanted to learn more about their individual positions.?

The interviews were incredibly interesting --- especially when they turned to education simply because the host seemed to ask every candidate how they felt about merit pay for teachers.?

Considering how important the issue has become in conversations about the future of education, I decided to whip up a list of three things that I wish every parent and politician knew about merit pay.

Here they are:

Experts in fields BEYOND education are convinced that merit pay plans WON'T improve schools.

The simple truth about merit-based compensation plans is that they are ONLY effective in fields that require "rudimentary cognitive skills."?

In fact, research has shown that compensation plans that tie pay to performance may actually have a NEGATIVE impact in knowledge-driven fields like education.

Need proof??

Then check out this RSA Animate video sharing the ideas of Daniel Pink -- a one-time supporter of merit pay plans in education whose personal opinion changed after studying nearly every independent research report on the impact of incentives on human motivation.?

Or this bit detailing the thinking of Chip and Dan Heath, who argue that our constant attempts to design a better carrot result in a tendency to focus on ONE variable -- which might successfully drive change in simple fields, but are destined to fail in work that is complex and dependent on multiple variables.

?

Most merit pay plans are generally built around high-stakes standardized tests that almost NEVER actually measure anything we REALLY want our students to know and be able to do.

In almost every conversation that I have with stakeholders about the skills that students need in order to succeed in tomorrow's workplace, people -- including employers in almost every field -- argue that kids need to be able to communicate, to collaborate, and to solve problems creatively.?

Sounds about right, doesn't it??

If YOUR child left school having mastered those three skills, you'd be happy and they'd be successful no matter what profession -- or personal passion -- they decided to pursue.

Here's the thing:? Today's high stakes standardized end-of-grade exams -- which are almost ALWAYS used as the basis for deciding which teachers deserve merit pay bonuses -- don't measure ANY of those skills.? Instead, they measure nothing more than a student's ability to remember and regurgitate facts.

Which means that the merit pay plans that wonks like to tout as silver bullets for motivating lazy teachers end up simultaneously stripping classrooms of the kinds of higher-order skills that we claim to care about.?

Need proof?? Then look at what years of teaching in a tested classroom did to my instruction.

?

If you want to incentivize something, incentivize collaboration.

Something incredibly powerful is happening in my professional life this year:? I'm working on a learning team with two young teachers who are literally changing the way that I teach.? Both are skilled at developing hands-on, inquiry-based science experiences for kids.

That's an area of REAL weakness for me even if I AM certified to teach middle school science!

What's cool, though, is I'm having JUST as a significant impact on my colleagues.?

I bring a bunch of nonfiction reading experience to our collective planning table -- I have spent the better part of my career in language arts classrooms, after all -- and that's helping my peers, who AREN'T trained reading teachers.

That means collaboration is paying off for ALL of the kids on our hallway.?

My students are benefiting from the inquiry-based strengths of my peers and their students are benefiting from my experience as a reading teacher.?

That's beautiful, right?

But here's the thing:? That collaboration will DIE in a merit-based workplace.

Think about it:? Would YOU share your best practices with struggling colleagues if you knew that there was a limited pot of money that was going to be given to a small handful of teachers that produced the best scores??

HECK NO.? You'd let THEM -- and more importantly, the KIDS in their classrooms -- fail miserably because it would give YOU a better chance of cashing in.

Which is why the report on redesigning professional compensation for educators that I wrote with 18 accomplished teachers a few years ago recommends incentivizing collaboration INSTEAD of individual performance.

If we believe that SOME teachers have discovered the best strategies for teaching essential knowledge and skills to our kids, why wouldn't we design incentive systems that encourage SHARING rather than COMPETITION between peers?

?

I get it, y'all.? There ARE real problems in our educational system that need to be addressed.? Change IS necessary. The uncomfortable truth that we've been all-too-willing to overlook is that our current approach to schooling just ain't working for a TON of our students.

But as a teacher AND a taxpayer, I cringe whenever I hear someone argue on behalf of merit pay programs simply because they WON'T improve schools.?

Instead, they're just another #edpolicy disaster that the kids in our classrooms will end up paying for.

?

Stock market wavers as investors digest earnings

(AP) ? A surprisingly strong housing report helped push the stock market mostly higher Wednesday, even as weak earnings reports from Intel and IBM weighed on the Dow Jones industrial average.

The Dow was down 23points at 13,529 as of 2:15 p.m., while the Standard & Poor's 500 index gained four points to 1,458.

Even though the two tech giants disappointed, overall earnings results have come in much better than some investors had feared, said Dan Veru, chief investment officer at Palisade Capital Management in Fort Lee, N.J.

"Everyone is breathing a sigh of relief that things aren't all that bad," Veru said. "That's what you see happening now."

Global heavyweights such as FedEx and Caterpillar had warned investors that China's slowing economy and Europe's ongoing debt crisis would weigh on quarterly profits.

The stock market shot higher Tuesday as results from Mattel, Goldman Sachs, and Johnson & Johnson beat expectations. For the week, the Dow is now up 1.5 percent and the S&P 500 is up 2.1 percent.

Analysts still expect that third-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 will shrink for the first time since 2009.

IBM reported sales late Tuesday that dropped below Wall Street's expectations. On a call with analysts, IBM's chief financial officer said the company faced "more challenging" market conditions in September, the final month of the quarter, as cautious customers and a weakening euro undercut its results. IBM stock sank $11.76 in afternoon trading to $199.24.

Without the drop in IBM, the Dow would be 90 points higher. Stocks with higher prices carry more weight in the average of 30 large companies. Every move of $1 in any Dow stock is equivalent to moving the Dow average 7.68 points.

Intel warned that sales of personal computers will likely remain weak during the holiday season this year. The chip-maker cut its revenue estimates for the year-end quarter when it reported results late Tuesday. Intel's stock fell 64 cents to $21.72.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that builders broke ground on building new single-family houses and apartments at the fastest pace since July 2008. Housing starts surged to an annual rate of 872,000 in September, far above estimates by economists.

"You might think it's a misprint," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG, in a note to clients. But over the past year, housing starts have climbed by 43 percent.

"If there was any doubt that the housing market was undergoing a recovery, even a modest one in the face of the terrible 2008 decline, those doubts should be erased by now," Greenhaus said.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite index edged down two points to 3,098.

The housing report helped push the yield on the 10-year Treasury note up to 1.80 percent from 1.72 percent late Tuesday. Better economic news usually sends traders out of safe assets like Treasurys.

What I Can Do For You, There's No - euphoria1287 - LiveJournal

So, to start this, did anyone else notice that the lj userheads are Slender Man? Or could be, with a little black suit.

Okay, that wasn't how I wanted to start this, but alas. I know I don't post on here so often anymore, and it's kind of sad. I may make more of an effort to be around on here, even if lj is largely pretty dead, at least around these parts. I think the only people who I still talk to on here who read and reply to my posts are Therese, Ashley, and now Meg. You girls all rock, but you knew that.?

Friday marked three months of really working on my depression, and I'm really coming a long way. Well, not on Friday itself, that was fraught with emotion later on due mostly to PMS and me being a doofus, but in the past three months, I've really done a hell of a lot of work on myself, and I would think it shows. I'm happy, I'm confident, I'm content, I'm excitable, I'm sexy as all hell, I'm funny, I'm bouncy, I'm fun, I'm just awesome these days. I'm very proud of myself, and I celebrated with some sushi with my brother (well, incidentally, sushi day fell on the same day as Friday, but shhh).?

What else, what else. Work has been a bit annoying, to be honest, because I'm having a hard time tracking down anyone to talk to with the other paper regarding other stories and even when my most recent story will be run. It's a little frustrating, but I'm keeping busy regardless and always looking for new opportunities. Today I found this autism site that is looking for writers, and I thought that would be kinda cool even if I don't know anything about autism. But I liked the voice and tone of the site, and I love writing and am still looking for any paid opportunities out there. Next year is for focusing on landing a magazine or newspaper slot, permanently.

In terms of other writing, the grunge site is going really well. I have began writing more because I put some invisible, nonexistent pressure on myself to write on there daily, sometimes even a few times a day. Most of the time I average two posts a day, and the url never changed, so if you're friends with me on twitter, you get linked to all of my posts, since I retweet them all. Rockcandy is going pretty well; I seem to always get attention on the pieces I write, so that's fun at least. In terms of my personal writing, I am getting back into that too. It's still slow going, which is frustrating sometimes. I have bursts where I just sit there and write, and it feels really awesome, but they're few and far between. However, I'm writing regularly, almost daily, so that's good. Everything is a little slower than usual, but I'm writing, and that's the best part. I mean, ever since I was laid off my writing schedule got fucked up, and sometimes I forget to write at all.

Lately I've been reading a lot of scary stories and relationship advice sites and this site called Cracked because I'm like addicted to articles/YouTube channels about video games that are informative and stuff. I don't know why, but that's the stuff I'm into lately. Ever since the whole Slender Man thing, I'm not really scared of stuff that used to really, really freak me out, like creepypastas. In fact, Meg hooked me up on this scary story reddit (I dunno what reddit really is lol), and I keep going back to it. I'm addicted. I don't read it too close to bedtime, but I love it. It's weird. I also watched this Cattle Decapitation music video that is so gory and disturbingly gross that it's not even on YouTube. I linked to it on Rockcandy. I dunno, it wasn't?that?bad. Ha ha. I don't know what's up with me lately, but I'm not scared of shit. Still not touching horror movies though.

I've always been watching a lot of Attitude Era wrestling with my brother, Pay-Per-Views and old Raws and Heats and stuff. Although I love the current roster and all, I still think that Attitude Era wrestling was head and shoulders above what current wrestling is. The storylines were edgy and pushed the envelope of what they could get away with. It was raunchy, sexy, scary, crazy, and yes, sometimes silly, but it was amazing. It wasn't without its flaws. I mean, sometimes you watch stuff from when you were a kid and you realize how shitty it was. Not so with this. It wasn't perfect, but man, the fans cared?so much, and WWE was forced to be better because they had competition. Sometimes I wish TNA was a viable entity and not just where washed up old wrestlers go to die, because WWE needs a swift kick in the ass in the form of competition.

Sorry, I have some wrestling people on here now, so I may ramble about it from time to time with specificity. Ignore if you choose.

I suppose I should mention this, since one of you (Therese) already knows, and I'm a sucky liar, and everyone else knows already anyway. Eddie and I are kinda...well, I don't know what we are. I suppose the term is dating again, although we only went out once, and it was two weekends ago. That was what the super vague yet satisfied post was about. I could write a whole fucking novel about the events that have transpired since I last mentioned him in July, and if you really want to hear about it, I could post the full story. I don't know entirely what's going to happen, but I have learned that wavering and keeping a dating profile open on the side is not really fair to any attempts at togetherness. I mean, I have never been in this situation before. That's why I read so much. I've become a relationship advice sponge, but I am far from perfect. I can, however, advise you on all of your relationship problems probably. I'm just still trying to figure mine out.?

Lastly, and on a fantastic final note to end this very informative post on, tomorrow Ashley and I are seeing Fiona Apple in New York City. I'm very excited, and a little nervous too, since Ashley and I have never met in person. This is the very best time ever for anyone to meet me, so I'm sure things will be fine. It's going to be a long and absolutely stellar day. I can't wait!?

This has been your Nicole life update.?

Clinton: I'm responsible for consulate security

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton repeated on Tuesday her statement taking sole responsibility for security at all of America's diplomatic missions, an attempt to clear a political obstacle for her boss, President Barack Obama ahead of his second debate with Republican Mitt Romney.

"I take responsibility," Clinton said in a written statement. "I'm in charge of the State Department's 60,000-plus people all over the world (at) 275 posts."

She would not answer questions on the statement.

With only weeks before the presidential election, outrage has crystallized around Vice President Joe Biden's claim in last week's debate with Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan that "we weren't told" about requests for extra security at the consulate where assailants killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Congressional hearings revealed that the State Department was aware of, and rejected, several requests for increased security in Benghazi. Spokesmen for both the State Department and the White House took pains Friday to make clear that Biden's "we" referred to the White House, where such requests would not go.

Clinton backed up Biden's assertion. "The president and the vice president certainly wouldn't be knowledgeable about specific decisions that are made by security professionals," she said Monday.

Three separate investigations into the attack are being conducted: an FBI probe into the deaths of the four Americans, an independent inquiry by a panel appointed by Clinton and the congressional hearings.

Initial reports attributed the cause of the violent attack as one of a number of spontaneous demonstrations in several Muslim countries over a film produced in the U.S. that denigrated the Prophet Muhammad. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, insisted on a number of talk shows in the days after the event that the investigation up to that point showed no indication of a planned attack. Within days, the White House reversed its position, saying new findings indicated the attack was intentional and coordinated.

"Everyone who spoke tried to give the information they had," Clinton's statement said. "As time has gone on, the information has changed, we've gotten more detail, but that's not surprising. That always happens."

She added, "What I want to avoid is some kind of political gotcha or blame game."

Republican senators said Clinton's claim was "a laudable gesture," but they put the responsibility for the Benghazi attack and what they called "an escalating pattern of attacks this year in Benghazi" squarely on Obama and his national security team.

"I think it's very laudable that she should throw herself under the bus," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Tuesday. "But first of all, responsibility for American security doesn't lie with the secretary of state. It lies with the president of the United States.

"It's either willful deception or a degree of incompetence and failure to understand fundamental facts on the ground...either one of those is obviously totally unacceptable," he told FOX News.

Obama ignored reporters' questions about Clinton's statement as he left Williamsburg, Va., for Tuesday night's debate with Romney in New York.

Clinton agreed with the need to keep the Benghazi tragedy out of politics.

"I know that we're very close to an election," Clinton told CNN. "I want to just take a step back here and say from my own experience, we are at our best as Americans when we pull together. I've done that with Democratic presidents and Republican presidents."

Crockpot Chicken Terikayki ? Cooking Whims

Accidents happen.

Imagine this scene:

You come home from work, change into your workout clothes, pop in the Jillian Michaels DVD, decide it?s a Level 2 kind of day, grab your weights, push the coffee table and chairs out of the way, lay down your exercise mat, lace up your shoes, and start pumping it out with jumping jacks and squats.

And halfway through the workout you get to the most annoying exercise of them all: backwards lunges with a dumbbell curl. You?ve done it 8 trillion times before, but this time for some unlucky reason, you go back for a lunge and lose your balance. You realize you have a half a second to catch your balance, but know it won?t happen in time, and in trying to regain it, you fall to your left?but your right leg stays to your right.

Yah?I fell. I fell hard, and twisted my right knee pretty badly in the process. Luckily I didn?t tear any ligaments or break any bones (though, I must say, having your kneecap pop out of place and then landing on it definitely feels like something broke).

Nevertheless, no physical activity was prescribed for me for 7-10 days. On top of that, when I can go back to physical activity, it has to be low impact moves. No Jillian for a while :(

If you know me, I don?t take the prescription ?sit down for 7-10 days? very well. I?m always on the go. More importantly, I?m very dedicated to my workout schedule. So it?s hard for me to lose 1-2 weeks of physical activity and still eat the way I normally do.

On top of that, cooking became very difficult. Standing up for an hour in front of the stove wasn?t really an option.

So I turned to my trusted, wonderful, beautiful, shiny, glorious friend.

My crockpot :)

Crockpots = lifesavers for those on a busy schedule (or those with disabled knees). Take ingredients. Throw into pot. Turn it on. Dinner when you come home. If I didn?t enjoy chopping veggies that much, I actually would probably use the crockpot every day. Anyone out there that does?

And after a little searching, I settled on this finger-lickin? recipe for chicken drumsticks in a homemade teriyaki sauce.

Honestly. The easiest crockpot recipe I?ve ever made.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 chicken drumsticks (I used 6)
  • 1/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp bottled minced garlic
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

Directions:

  1. Spray a slow cooker lightly with cooking spray. Lay the chicken in an even layer in the pot.
  2. Whisk together the water and cornstarch. Then add in the soy sauce, ginger, honey, and minced garlic.
  3. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Cover the crockpot and cook on Low for 8-10 hours.
  4. Serve over rice and a with a side of veggies.

My Two Cents:?Absolutely phenomenal. And, as I usually say, I know when a recipe is a true winner when Chris goes back for seconds and steals all of the leftovers for his lunch the next day ;) The sauce had just the right amount of sweetness to it, and the chicken was incredibly tender ? it slid right off the bone.

I imagine this would work just as well with any kind of chicken that you have ? breasts, thighs, etc.

Seriously people.

So. Easy.

:)
