Soccer registration open

The Newman Recreation Department has opened registration for the 2011 youth soccer program, which begins play in September.

The league is open to boys and girls ages 5-14 (must be 5 by Dec. 1, 2011, and if 14 must be in eighth grade).

Fee is $50 per player, with a $5 discount for each sibling. Birth certificate required at time of registration.

After June 10, the fee increases to $60 per player. The late registration period continues through June 24, at which time a waiting list will be established.

An additional fee of $10 applies to players residing outside the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

Players may register weekdays from 3-6 p.m. at the Newman Youth Center on Hardin Road. Registration forms may be downloaded from the city of Newman web site.

Volunteers and coaches are needed. All volunteers must be fingerprinted no later than Aug. 1.

Men?s softball league

The 2011 Gustine Men?s Softball League is accepting teams.

Roster forms are available at Gustine City Hall.

All rosters and fees of $500 per team must be turned in no later than May 26.

League play starts June 6, with games played on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Kids? Fishing Day

San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area will host its 22nd annual Kids? Fishing and Fun Day Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at San Luis Creek on the O?Neil Forebay.

Children ages 3-15 may participate. Those attending are asked to provide their own fishing poles. Free bait is provided.

In addition to fishing, the day offers a variety of crafts and activities, including free pontoon boat rides (weather permitting) and a free ?fishing simulator? to try as well.

The only cost is the $10 per car state park day use fee.

To reach the San Luis Creek area, take the San Luis Creek turn-off from Highway 152 (west of Highway 33) at the O?Neil Forebay and follow the signs.

Sports camps offered

The Newman Recreation Department will offer a series of sport camps and lessons through the summer months.

The lineup of events is as follows.

?? The first of two sessions of tennis lessons will be held June 8-29, with the second to follow from July 6-27. Classes meet in the evenings at Orestimba High School. Age groups include 4-7, 8-17 and junior excellence/adult. Fee is $60.

?? A youth soccer camp open to players in kindergarten through eighth grade will be held June 13-17 in Sherman Park. The camp meets each morning from 9-11. Fee is $25. Registration deadline is Friday, June 10.

?? A youth basketball camp open to boys and girls in grades 3-8 will be held June 20-24 at Yolo. The camp will meet from 5-7 p.m. Fee is $25. Registration deadline is June 17.

?? A flag football program will be offered June 21 through July 28, meeting Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Newman Youth center. Age groups are 8-10 and 11-13. Fee is $25.

?? A volleyball camp will be offered July 25-28. The camp meets from 9 a.m. to noon at Yolo Middle School. It is open to grades 4-8. Fee is $25 per student. Registration deadline is July 22.

A $10 surcharge applies to participants living outside the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District.

Volunteers are needed to help with the summer programs.
